Customer Reviews:

Small, solid unit with a brilliant image5
The Optoma EP727 projector was much smaller than we expected, and very lightweight, but it didn’t feel flimsy at all, just solid and well-built.

We bought this to use for a theatre show. The set largely consisted of slides projected onto a backdrop, and we were worried about having the slides bright and sharp, despite the long throw and the bright stage lights illuminating the actors. No trouble – this was great! We fastened the projector up on the lighting bar, and strung a 50′ VGA cable up, over, and down to the controlling computer (an old G3 Apple iBook). It worked flawlessly. We were not certain the remote would work from that distance (the projector was 20′ in the air) but we had no problem turning the machine on and off remotely. The keystoning feature was very useful, since we were projecting from well above the stage.

The projector had no trouble with long ‘on’ times. It was on continuously for about 5 hours during the dress rehersal, and for about 2 hours for each performance. I was really impressed when it recovered without a hiccup when we triggered a circuit breaker and the power went out. That happened twice; once during rehersal and once during a performance.

In fact, the only complaint I have at all is that the projector boots while projecting the name “Optoma”, then hunts for the computer signal. If it weren’t for that, I’m sure the audience would not have noticed when the circuit blew during the performance (it was during a transition in the play, and a blackout might have been appropriate). As it was, it only took a minute or so to get fully operational again.

We did not use the DVI input for this show, but I tried it with my home computer (which has a DVI video out) and the projector image looked especially sharp.

Basically, I love it.

Optoma EP727 Burned out lamp under 200 hours1
This Optoma ep727’s lamp burned out in under 200 hours. The company won’t replace this. Over $300 to replace the lamp. What a poor piece of equipment and a terrible company with horrible customer service. YOU SHOULD NOT BUT THIS PIECE OF JUNK.

Pleased with Optoma EP727 Projector5
I find my Optoma EP727 to be just what I needed and at a nice price. Its size and weight make it very portable and the bulb brightness is suitable for use at a wide range of venues. I use it for slide shows and video projections, as well as showing HDTV. The projector has all of the inputs I need as well as the feature controls desirable for my range of uses.
The only negative I have found is that the control buttons are very tender indeed. I have accidentally powered the projector down numerous times while adjusting the direction or tilt. A detent position on the buttons would be a good improvement.

Beats Porsche Carrera GPS + Love the Backup Cam!5
I regularly ride in a friend’s shiny new 2009 Porsche and I have to say, their GPS sucks by comparison! You’d think a $100k+ sports car would have a killer GPS — NOT! The maps were sparse, the colors muted, the speech barely audible and the user interface convoluted and unintuitive. Now I know Porsche’s primary concern is the car, not the GPS, but for a top dollar luxury product, you’d think their GPS would be equally cutting edge. I honestly prefer my Garmin Nuvi 5000. The difference is stark! Its no wonder Garmin is widely considered to make the best GPS units on the market.

I zeroed in on the Nuvi 5000 primarily because of the larger screen and that it’s one of the few GPS units to support a backup camera. For those of you who don’t know, a backup camera is a tiny video camera (mine is the size of a dime) that mounts on the back of your car, often the license plate, with a video cable run to a monitor or GPS mounted on the dash. Then when you put your car in reverse, the cam turns on and you get a live video image of what’s behind your car! Very helpful when parallel parking or backing up and you see so much more than with a rearview mirror alone! It’s one of those things that once you have it, you wonder why it took so long or how you ever lived without it!

Backup cams aren’t just for big SUVs or trucks. I have mine on a sedan and really love the extra perspective it gives. It’s such a luxury to be able to SEE everything with no blind spots!!! LOVE it!!! As more cars come standard with GPS units, I could see backup cams becoming standard issue. It’s so much safer to backup with the extra visibility and virtually no blind spots!

Setup was easy. I got a vent mount for the Nuvi itself since windshield mounts are illegal in California. But I actually prefer the vent mount anyway since it places the Nuvi at the perfect level without obstructing my view of the road. Then I mounted the tiny cam above my rear license plate. Hooked up the ground and power wires to the rear tail light – the one that lights up only in reverse — then ran the cable through the trunk, behind the rear seat, along the floor panels and to the Nuvi. It’s not as hard as it sounds and there are videos on YouTube that can help clarify. It took me about 90min to hook it all up. And I even hardwired the Nuvi to the car’s fuse box so it automatically turns on and off with the car’s ignition.

The GPS itself is stellar. The colors are vibrant and inviting. The satellite response time is lightening fast and the interface is easy, intuitive and very user friendly. I was able to use 90% of the functions without even reading the User Guide. It’s that easy and straightforward. I even set up specific routes I like to take to work and other destinations so the Nuvi can take the roads I prefer and get me back on track if I take a detour to avoid traffic and such.

The “Points of Interest” feature is amazing!! Just type in what you’re looking for – a specific grocery store, department store, drugstore, gas station, etc and the Nuvi finds all the nearby matches! I haven’t searched anything yet that it can’t find! Very thorough database and up to date too!

While navigating, the verbal cues are loud and clear. And the screen itself had loads of useful info. I like the estimated time of arrival feature. I like how it changes the color scheme automatically for night and day making it easier to read in both cases. I love being able to play solitaire while waiting for someone to come out of a store. I love feeling like I’ll never get lost or have a problem finding anything in a big city like L.A.! But most of all, I love the backup cam!! And be sure to setup a security code so no one can mess with your settings; a thief, valet or anyone else.

It really is such a luxury to have a quality GPS!! Sometimes I just use it as a live map depicting where I am without inputting my destination. It’s helpful to have a live visual confirmation of where you are and what streets are nearby.

For my first GPS, I have to say I’m quite impressed with the Nuvi 5000! Welcome to the 21st century!!! Definitely get one!! You’ll be glad you did!

Garmin Nuvi 5000 GPS5
This was a replacement purchase for one that was accidently broken. We use this model in our fleet of F-350 trucks. Screen size is sufficient for distance from dash board. Product works just fine and is easy to install software updates. We recommend this product.

Lousy Advertising1
This GPS is NOT intended for RV or Trucker usage. Does not support option to enter size of vehicle and is misrepresented by Garmin. Has a “truck mode” which basically puts you on major highways regardless if highway specifications that prohibit truck use. Garmin choose to use the wording RV and Truck due to the larger screen size which basically means nothing and you can get in trouble with roadways that do not accomodate rigs with height.

Customer Reviews:

Really nice 32″ 1080p LCD TV/Monitor5
I selected this TV/Monitor because it has the best combination of size and features for the price and for my situation. I use it as a stand alone TV, plus as a shared monitor for 2 different computers (not at the same time). It handles all the various resolutions with ease, and you can customize variables for each input. Nice! ~ It was easy to carry & to set up by myself. The initial scanning for channels did take a good while. Of course, your mileage may vary! ~ The remote is kind of top heavy because of where the batteries are. It does everything you really need, but you might prefer a different remote. Otherwise, I’m quite pleased with this TV!

Good mid sized TV5
This TV got a very good rating in Consumer Reports. Knowing nothing about TVs, I purchased it without really having any idea whether it would live up to its reviews. It was easy to set up, and the picture and sound quality are very good. The viewing angle is worth noting…it’s visible from a a very wide angle, unlike a lot of other tvs I’ve seen. No complaints here.

Good deal Lucille!4
Consumer Report pointed to this TV so I ordered it when I saw it on a home shopping channel. Then ordered it a couple days later from Amazon when I learned I could refuse delivery on the first TV and not be charged shipping expense! Total saved was $130. I love the TV and a good deal!

Excellent addition to our office5
The Brother DCP-9045CDN (the listed model number was incorrectly stated as DCP-9045CDW at the time of this writing) is a very well designed color laser printer/scanner/copier with impressive built-in networking and duplex capabilities.

First, it performs very nicely as a network color laser printer. It uses four toner cartridges (black, yellow, cyan, & magenta) that are easily accessed via a simple sliding drawer at the front of the unit. The toner cartridges are available in standard-capacity and high-capacity. While it is a little disappointing that the machine ships with the standard-capacity cartridges, this seems to be the ‘norm’ in the printer industry. However, I recommend purchasing the high-capacity cartridges when it is time to replenish your supplies, since they are a better value.

The machine comes with a 250-sheet standard paper tray as well as a 50-sheet “Multi-purpose” paper tray that folds down from the front of the unit. Many printers that we have used in the past also had one of these “multi-purpose”-type trays, but they usually amounted to nothing more than a single sheet manual feeder or an envelope feeder; we like the fact that this one holds 50 sheets and can actually be used as a second paper tray. We also purchased the optional 500-sheet paper tray so that we can have plain paper, letterhead, and labels loaded at the same time. The unit can use legal size paper in addition to letter size.

We really love the built-in duplex feature, and it is one of the main reasons that we purchased this model, as it saves us a ton on paper costs. We found that the prices of machines with built-in duplex capabilities (especially color models) were typically substantially higher than machines without duplex, and, initially, we didn’t think we could afford a color laser with duplex. However, the 9045CDN was surprisingly within our budget.

As for network printing, this machine has very robust network support. It supports TCP/IP v4 as well as TCP/IP v6, which means its network capabilities should be about as future-proof as possible. The 9045CDN supports peer-to-peer type networks as well as server-based networks, and the included software and setup guide make it very easy to setup the unit to work with either type of network. The machine includes drivers for Windows 2000, Windows XP (32-bit & 64-bit), Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 (32-bit & 64-bit), and Mac OS X 10.2.4 (or greater.)

Second, this machine not only scans, but it is actually a network scanner. We looked at several other network printers that had scanning capabilities, but most of them could only scan to a single computer through a USB cable – their network capabilities were limited to printing only. However, the 9045CDN can scan directly to any computer that is attached to our network! In addition, it can scan directly to an FTP server on the network or on the Internet. The automatic document feeder is very handy and this machine will even perform duplex scanning and copying! The scanner glass is large enough for legal size paper; however, the automatic feeder only supports up to letter size paper, so legal size documents must be scanned or copied one at a time.

Beyond network printing and scanning, the 9045CDN, of course, has the obligatory USB port on the rear so that you can attach the machine directly to a single computer rather than to a network. There are also several nice features that allow you to use the machine without even having to boot up any computers. For instance, you can print directly from or scan directly to a USB memory key (i.e. flash drive, etc.); just plug your flash drive into the USB port on the front of the machine, and print your documents and pictures that are stored on the flash drive. You can also attach a PictBridge compatible camera to the machine and print your photos without a computer. The machine also works great as a standalone color copier.

We were able to replace two non-network monochrome laser printers, a color inkjet multifunction printer/scanner, and a copier with one 9045CDN. For most of our printing/copying we use the 9045CDN in black and white mode, but when we need color it is there, and it is substantially less expensive per page to print in color than the color inkjet printer that this unit replaced. We are very pleased with this unit.

So Far, So Good…4
For the price and the available features, I think Brother succeeded with the DCP-9045, and I would certainly recommend it. The print quality, speed, and ease of use are all superior. I have only discovered one shortcoming so far. Despite the owner’s manual’s claim to the contrary, envelopes don’t print well. They come out with several small crimps on the edges. I ended up keeping the old inkjet printer in our office to use as an envelope printer. Apart from that, it’s a great addition to our small office.

Solid, almost perfect.4
Excellent printer, finally I have just one affordable printer for all my scanning & printing needs (color duplex scan, copy and print).

I’ll highlight the few less than perfect features. Don’t get me wrong for the $ this is a great printer and I’m happy to be using it, but you are here for the nitty gritty dirt so I’ll dish it.

It is a bit slow on copy/scan and print operations, the paper tray only holds around 1/3 of a ream of paper, I can’t stuff 250 in there without paper jams. For a network mid-volume printer holding anything less than a ream is a joke. When printing more than 50 sheets at a time it’s common for a few pages to jump out of the receiving bin and need to be placed back in the printed document, I’d expect a printer of this type to hold at least 250 printed sheets without spewing them on the floor.

It’s sooooo close to perfect, just misses that mark on those few items.

Customer Reviews:

Great Unit, Great Price4
I picked the 5140 over the 6140 because I don’t need bluetooth, besides that the units are exactly identical. Had Best Buy install the unit, they did a superb job for much less than what some of the local audio shops were quoting me.

Now, onto the unit:

-Boot up time is fast, I’m going good in about 10 seconds. I’ve heard other units are rather slow to boot up (Pioneer). So far no freezing or locking up except I get some lag when using USB (more later). It has an easy to understand interface but I did have to check out the manual once or twice on specific things. I like the fact you can pick what color you want the interface and physical buttons to light up, I have my radio matching my dash lights.

-Navigation is great, and if you ever owned a Garmin unit you know full well how the navigation works. The navigation integrates great into the radio controls. The voices are a little loud and your music will mute for your voice guidance. If you are using your radio controls while navigating a route you will get a green notification bar at the bottom that shows the distance and the next turn you should make. I also like how it shows the speed limit and so far that’s been very accurate. Garmin also updates their maps on a regular basis, and you can use the Garmin updates to update this unit. Some other manufacturers of in dash navigation don’t update after release. Since I plan on having this unit for a few years that was important to me.

-Works great with Sirius. I have my display setup as “4-line” which gives me three lines of song data plus one line of arrow controls. You can pick and choose where and what song data you want displayed with satellite. I personally picked Artist/Song Title/Channel Name in that order. Sirius also gives you 30 presets (6 per “band” and a maximum of 5 bands). Also there’s an option to list all channels and you can see what artist or song is playing on each channel organized by category. Very neat.

-The USB function is seriously lacking, and the reason I gave this unit 4 stars. First off the USB is slow, and the unit seems to lag when using the USB function. Also for some reason you’re limited to 255 items per folder so if you have more than 255 songs you must start organizing your music in different subfolders. If you open a video file via USB it takes 30 seconds or so before it starts playing, and the unit will freeze during that time until the video starts.

-Video display is crisp and clear. I’ve seen complaints about dimming but I don’t share those complaints. I set my unit to dim with the GPS. This unit will play Divx/Xvid formatted files but you must change the name of the file from filename.avi to filename.mpg. The US version will not play .avi files, I guess due to piracy concerns. It’s a cool feature not found on the spec sheet of the unit.

-I didn’t buy the iPod cable because I figured I’d just use a USB drive, but due to the terrible USB interface I’ll have to buy an iPod cable. Hooking and iPod to the unit via USB without the cable gives no sound or video but it will let you test the iPod interface. It works beautifully.

I’ve been very happy with the unit.

Excellent Navigation System5
I just purchased the Kenwood DNX5140 directly from Amazon.com — I try to not to buy from 3rd party because I love the flexibility and awesome customer support from Amazon.:)

I installed the Kenwood DNX5140 in my 2007 Jeep Commander Sport 4×4 3.7L 7-seater. I had to buy a $150 dash bezel for the NAV unit to fit. I placed the GPS antenna right on top of the Kenwood Head Unit, which is, of course, inside the dash. I park my Commander under a concrete parking garage at work, and I still get excellent GPS reception. In other words, you don’t have to install the GPS OUTSIDE your car or even ON TOP of the Dashboard. Just install it on top of the metal head unit (magnetic). That way, no one will even see any wires! :)

By the way, my 2003 Honda Odyssey’s GPS antenna and other Jeep Commander’s GPS antennas are located INSIDE the dash too!!!

There are 3 NAV voice guidance options:
1)English – Female voice NOT Text to Speech
2)English Jill – Female voice Text to Speech
3)English Jack – Male voice Text to Speech

Option#1 gives the most natural sounding voice – like an actual woman talking next to you.
Option#2 & #3 both sound like “robots” talking. They do speak the actual streets to turn, but they sound so robotic it turns me off.

I ended up just turning the voice guidance off in the Audio Guidance Option menu.

So I just listen to music via my USB thumb drive (in my glove compartment) and watch the cool NAV screen give directions. :)

You can change the EQs to improve on your sound quality, especially if you have sorry speakers like me. :) I will probably end up upgrading to better speakers — most likely from Amazon.com.

What else can I say about this unit? It is great. The NAV is excellent. Calculation time takes about 2 seconds! It is extremely fast! Rerouting time takes about 1 second. The DVD player works great. The USB works great. I even changed the picture of the background, which is no big deal.

I LOVE MY KENWOOD DNX5140 from Amazon!!!!!

Excellent value, and nearly identical to the DNX61405
I first installed a DNX6140 from Crutchfield in my 2005 Toyota Sienna. Really liked it, but kind of expensive, so did some comparative shopping for a second unit for my 1991 Toyota MR2. Bought this DNX5140 through Amazon, which was considerably less expensive and the only difference being the lack of Bluetooth. I added Kenwood’s Bluetooth adapter for $100 and it’s now identical to my 6140, but at a much lower cost. I highly recommend both the DNX5140 and DNX6140, excellent units and easy to use.

Customer Reviews:

Best bang for the buck!5
I shopped around for about 2 weeks and looked all the makes and models. I ended up purchasing the Canon 4690. The Canon 4690 is very easy to install, configure, and network. All settings can be configured via a handy web interface. The unit is very fast, quiet, and ergonomic. Warm up time is better than expected. With a small footprint, this Canon fits nicely in any home/office setting. From a hardware perspective, this unit meets and exceeds all comparable units out there on the market. Where most multifunction units have only 32 to 64 MB of RAM, it appears that this unit has 128 MB – although for some reason, you won’t see this documented. I learned this from printing out my 4690’s configuration page. In any event, more memory is very nice for those large print jobs. Networking and printer installation is a snap. The paper handling is convenient. Printing, copying, faxing, and scanning are ridiculously easy with the Canon 4690. Believe me; I looked at Dell, Epson, HP, Lexmark, and even other Canon models. Bottom line: The Canon 4690 offers the most technology for this price level.

Mac User BEWARE!!!!2
First of all let me say that if you’re a PC user, read all the other reviews of this unit. It really is a nice unit with all the features described. The reason I’m giving it two stars is because of what I feel is Canon’s intentional misleading of the public when they claim that this is Mac compatible. From the box to the manual to the website, Canon uses the Mac logo to communicate that this unit is Mac compatible. This is only PARTIALLY true. This unit works ONLY as a printer and fax with the Macs – NOT A SCANNER. No where is this ever communicated. Even the printed manual and the Advanced Manual that is provided as a PDF on an included CD make any mention of the fact that you can not use this as a scanner on a Mac. Furthermore, Canon has no plans on ever making a driver so that you can do scans on a Mac. It’s not bad that the unit can’t do Mac scanning but I’d rather know about that BEFORE I purchase it and set it up at home.

Solid construction and feature-laden unit4
I shopped for a week and looked at Brother, HP, and Samsung B/W laser multifunctional printers before picking this Canon multifunctional unit. Set up was very easy, until I got to connecting it to the network via a Cat5e cable. Canon says the unit will automatically pick up the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address using DHCP, but a call to Canon Tech Services recommended manual entry of these values. The tech walked me through the procedure, so now all my PC’s connected to my router can use the printer. I highly recommend Canon Tech Services. They have a 12-hour toll-free number and offer lifetime free telephone support.

Pluses:
1. Speedy printing
2. Backlit LCD screen
3. The MF4690 has a neat remote Web page User Interface for reviewing and changing printer/fax/copier/scanner settings.
4. Text prints are very sharp (compared with those from my HP LaserJet 1200)

Negatives:
1. Comes with “starter” toner cartridge
2. Another negative (not prominently mentioned) is that the unit will NOT support network scanning. You must be connected via USB to do scanning to e-mail and scanning to a file server. However, you CAN perform scanning to a USB thumb drive and it outputs as PDF, JPG, or BMP files.

Update: I was told by Canon Tech Services that you can connect with both USB and Network connections at the same time, thus you have the full-range of scanning options with this printer (via USB) and still get the benefits of network connections.

Update #2: After reading some of the HP printer reviews, I am glad that Canon support is USA-based, so there is no language barrier.

Customer Reviews:

Great product………great value for money!4
Both the price and the product are great! The product works well. My only regret is that the LCD project did not come with a custom-made case nor was one offered for sale by the agent at an additional cost. Most LCD manufactures provide a custom-made case to enable easy mobility of the item. The manufacturer needs to improve in this area.
