Customer Reviews:

WOW5
I did a ton of research on all the reviews for this and other TV’s, which focused on the expert sites like AVS Forum. After all the research, I was actually a little hesitant on this purchase with the ‘Yellow’ being possibly a little bit of a marketing gimmick. However the plunge was made and ‘WOW’ at times it feels like a 3D TV and my wife still is amazed and she doesn’t get into technology. I would give this TV a Solid A+.

Good PQ, Glare problems4
1. If you get this tv, do yourself a favor and turn off film mode. Somehow it removes all semblance of depth-of-field and makes everything look like it was shot on a soap-opera set.

2. There are setting to directly effect the color decoder, so image calibration should be easy. Unfortunately I think the yellow pixel makes the Avia color decoder patterns useless for this. Adjusting (the rgb) color levels to accurate made the picture laughable. Stick with just tint/saturation controls until someone figures out how to actually calibrate an rgb+y display.

Overall, a few tweaks made the PQ pretty good. The defaults don’t seem to have any red or green push evident in the picture, even though the avia decoder patterns has them at > -25% off. I assume that’s due to the yellow LCD pixel. The blacks on the picture are black, but there aren’t any surprises here with LCD and shadow detail. You’ll have to crank brightness up a bit to see any shadow detail, which will lighten up the blacks. Plasma is still king here.

Tech Overkill or Next Gen?4
We purchased the TV this week. A great mid $1,500 price point, latest and greatest LED, and $80 bucks per month no interest, could not beat it. Obviously at the store, on Blu Ray, looked amazing! We mounted on the existing mount and connected to home Theater. We played Mr. Holland Opus from the DVR and looked…. Horrible :) . As the other reviewer stated, like a soap opera set. Oh my! Firstly we turned off OPC…. we are very “green” in our lifestyle, but this feature drives us crazy! Makes things dark. Secondly, the faces were getting “distorted”…. so we turn off the Film feature… Thirdly we brought the picture size down…. So we survived the first experience…. and related cognitive dissonances! Net, net the TV is very advanced, the light and brightness is amazing, playing HD is incredible. It really looks almost like a 3D experience. We love the design and how it sounds (through a Samsung one-box 7.1 home Stereo, so can’t judge the TV sound). The other issue is the regular channels like CNN etc. the captions look fazy and the faces not very clear! Is my perception getting used to HD or just the TV? We would very much appreciate any guidance on adjusting the picture, the reds, the other settings…. seem to be off, but it is very hard to have a standard as it varies on HD, Non HD, by channel etc.

Net, net, while we are not “first movers” we are very happy with this choice and the high end aspects… only if we can adjust it right, the world moves to HD and rose colored glasses… we shall be ok.. Input is appreciated.

The Polk Audio SurroundBar is designed to complete your High Definition TV experience. It’s the perfect match for flat-panel and shallow screen TVs. And it works with any surround sound receiver. Polk’s patented SDA Surround technology means there’s no need to install rear speakers. SDA Surround creates a completely immersive experience, as if there were dozens of speakers all around you. This technology is based on fundamental research into the way our ears process sound and perceive the direction of sounds. The SurroundBar works in any room, SDA Surround is not dependent on your room’s walls to produce the surround effect. It uses a patented combination of signal processing and acoustical geometry that complements the spacing between your ears to produce surround sound without the need for rear mounted speakers. Since the SurroundBar works directly with the hearing mechanism and requires no special room characteristics, it can deliver a room-filling surround experience in nearly any location in almost any type of room.Installation versatility is designed in. You can wall mount the SurroundBar right below your flat-panel TV. Or use the included cradle on a TV stand, a shelf or for set-top placement. The Polk Audio SurroundBar is a welcome addition for anyone who wants all the thrills of surround sound… but none of the hassles. The SurroundBar is simple to set up. The conductor cable is color-coded and clearly marked for easy hookup, even your kids can do it.

Polk SurroundBar vs Yamaha YSP-10004
My Home Theatre was a reasonable system by any measure and better than most. However, my wife re-arranged the living room furniture and in one stroke my cherished system was made redundant. My two rear wall mounted speakers were now on my left and with no possibility to be mounted somewhere else.

It was time to look at the Polk & Yamaha products.

Being unable to audition a Polk SurroundBar and Yamaha YSP-1000 in an A/B comparison, I consequently decided to purchase both, with the idea that I would eventually keep one and sell the other.

I have now had both units for about 10 weeks and when doing my A/B comparisons, both systems are set up so that one speaker is sitting just above the other, playing the same material and with instant A/B switching via remote control.
Note – It takes quite a few readings of instruction manuals to eventually understand how to set them both up properly.

After comparing Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pink Floyd Pulse and a variety of CDs and music videos, my assessment is :

1/. Both products do produce a satisfying sound field effective for watching movies (albeit in very different ways).

2/. In my living room ( which is pretty “live”) and my equipment with the Polk, they both sound remarkably similar. This was a big surprise to me.
On CDs and some music videos, most noticeable differences in sound is mostly due to subwoofer performance.

3/. Does either system produce effects equal to a 5 channel system with discrete rear speakers ? Of course the answer is “no”. Neither of these systems can produce rear surround effects as distinct as those generated by rear surround speakers.

But in so many ways this question misses the real point as to the issues these products successfully address :

4/. Let me rephrase the question :
Do both systems produce a big sound field that envelopes you, similar to what one might experience at a real cinema? The answer is “YES”
Do you hear convincing surround sound effects as intended by the movie producers, immerse you into the movie and thus enhance your enjoyment ? Once again the answer is “YES”.

5/. If you want decent home theatre sound but cannot install a multi-speaker surround system or you simply don’t want to, then these products are a solution that do work.

6/. After reading forums on the net, I had the idea that the Polk was going to sound better than the YSP when it came to music. Actually for CDs etc, they both sound about the same, have a similar tone, both produce a big sound, go as loud as each other (and that can be very loud indeed). Nothing to distinguish one as being really better than the other, assuming that the Polk is coupled to a quality surround amp and sub. The surprise here was that the Yamaha with it’s myriad of “tiny” 2 watt amplifiers is comfortable at really loud sound levels.

7/. Which is better?
Both have plus and minus points so it isn’t that clear cut.

Yamaha YSP-1000 with matching YST-SW225B 150W subwoofer :-
PLUS points :-
+ Guaranteed a great sounding Home Theatre system. Yamaha engineers have made sure of that.
+ In-built power amplification ( this is termed an ‘active’ speaker and is generally a desirable configuration)
+ Decent pre-amplifier functionality eg volume control (with dB level displayed), bass & treble control, audio & video input selection ( selectable 4 sources ), auto-room equalisation, plenty of surround sound modes, IR signal pass-through, a remote control capable of macros etc. In fact the YSP-1000 has a remarkable amount of technology literally stuffed into it.
+ More effective in producing distinct surround sound effects than the Polk, especially when set up in it’s “ideal” configuration. ie centred against a wall in a square room.
+ YSP can effectively compensate for being in a corner position (contrary to the notion that the YSP works well only when in an ideal environment)
+ Remote can control other manufacturers products.
+ All you need extra is a DVD player and a TV.

MINUS points :
- Requires side and rear walls.
- Looks bulky and industrial, in my opinion not an attractive addition to any living room.
- The Titanium colour ( more like dark grey ) is not a good match with most silver big screen TVs.
- The remote is a bit frustrating at times, too easy to be in the wrong control mode, eg you find yourself changing TV channels when you may intended to change surround mode.
- No HDMI input/output
- Cannot transcode between Composite & Component video signals. You are committed to an all Composite or all Component input / output video signal pathway. ( Not really a problem if every device you connect to the YSP’s video inputs has Composite Video out.)
- On-screen menues only available with Composite video. So if you decide to go all Component Video pathway for best picture quality, you then lose your YSP’s On-Screen menues.
- No S-Video inputs
- Probably impossible for an owner to tell if any of the 40 speakers/amplifiers inside the cabinet have failed and need replacing.
- Should have a DVD player in built.

POLK SurroundBar :-
PLUS points :
+ Looks great, visually complementing most big screen TV sets very nicely.
+ Does not require side and rear walls to your listening room.
+ Similar to the Yamaha with respect to it’s capability to produce a big, convincing sound field.
+ Would make an excellent choice for an “all-in-one” Right/Centre/Left front speaker in a conventional surround system.

MINUS points :-
- Requires investment in a 5 channel home theatre Amplifier plus a Subwoofer
- Not guaranteed a great sounding Home Theatre system. The Polk’s full potential could be easily compromised by a `weak link” resulting from a poor choice of ancillary equipment.
- Surround effects are never really localised, rather you hear them as originating from a hazy, general area, as comapared to the Yamaha which creates a more convincing localisation of the effect.

8/. Conclusion :

For good looks – POLK SurroudBar
For rooms without side or rear walls – POLK SurroundBar
For square or rectangular rooms, even with the YSP in a corner – YAMAHA YSP
For “most bang for your dollar” – YAMAHA.YSP

Both sound good ( remarkably similar ) and will probably end up costing about the same to set up once you add the necessary ancilliary equipment to the Polk.

In my particular situation I am trying to rid my living room of as many boxes as possible. Consequently, if Polk had managed to squeeze in a pre-amp and power amp into their SurroundBar and charged accordingly, then the Polk would be my first choice. It just looks that much better than the YSP unit does.
Unfortunately they haven’t, so Yamaha stays and I’m now selling off the Polk along with my existing Denon amp, B&W sub & Anthony Gallo speakers.

Room Dependent3
Based on what friends have said, I think that this is probably a good product depending on your room size and shape. For me, it didn’t work. I connected it to my tuner (Sony STR-DE925) and I didn’t hear anything close to surround sound. This was at 10 feet away since I have a 62 inch tv. When I sit on the coffee table 3 feet away, I can hear the surround.

I had a friend come over and make adjustments to my tuner and he said he could hear the surround occasionally, but it was very subtle. For $800, I want something that’s better than subtle.

I believe this product will work, but check it out in a store before you buy it. Then be ready to return it if it doesn’t work for your room.

PS – I gave it a 3, only because I had to give it something and 3 is dead center… :)

Going to agree with an earlier review: Decent3
Since I have a toddler now, I decided to go ahead and sell my Paradigm speakers and move to a smaller, more compact system. The highlights of my old system include Paradigm Monitor 7s, the CC370 Center, and Paradigm’s 12″ powered sub. Needless to say, pushed with my old Pioneer Elite receiver, the results were great. After some listening now, I have to say that the Polk set up is just OK. If you’ve been using your TV speakers for years, you’re going to like this, especially in a smaller room. It is most definitely a step up from the speakers in my Samsung LN52a650. However, even pared with a Polk sub (I’m using the powered 10″), it lacks a lot of the mid range and punchy base that I’ve been used to. I’m sure over time, as I tweak my Yamaha receiver, I’ll learn to like it enough to get me through the toddler/young kid years and back into a real surround set up. It does beat the tv speakers. But it’s not a real life substitute for the real surround, especially if you’re used to a large set up and are in a larger room. In a nutshell, it’s a glorified center channel speaker with aspirations of surround sound. It just falls a bit short.

The Most Solid Tv on the Market for the Money5
First of all you can get the tv at best buy during sales for 2199 and then get them to match a coupon for sears for 10% off.
Secondly, there are no voice issues if you use the right kind of hdmi cable…get the brand new updated version and you won’t have
any problems. Third, do yourself a favor and buy the new ps3 to play your movies on..even if you don’t need a game system.
It has wireless networking, it’s down to 299 and it will display all your photos and music on your tv, it’s like having a 120
gig hard drive hooked up to your tv with blueray capability. I have been looking for a year for the right tv and i knew this
was it. The picture is fully backlit, instead of edgelit like the Samsung, that makes a big difference in the details. The
other thing is that the picture is absolutely stunning. The LED technology will save you money over plasmas and last longer…
approximately 7-15 years longer. It doesn’t run as hot as plasmas, the electricity cost you a lot less, there’s no fear of burn in,
the picture is unbelievable and there’s several places to use it as a computer monitor. Pertaining to other people’s comments
about the power light, it actually blends into the background when you’re watching tv or a movie, it’s not bothersome at all, but
in the case that it does bother you really bad, hey, just get a sharpie, lol. Some of you reading this are wondering what tv to
buy. If you do your research, consumer reports, cnet and all those, they will tell you this is one of the best in the 55″ category.
The contrast ratio is 2,000,000 to 1, the automotion ms response time is 4 or less because of the 240 hz, not as fast as a plasma but how many people were complaining when there lcd’s were just 120 hz…no one was. Anyway, good luck with your decision but at the end
of the day if you buy this tv, you’ll be happy.

Outstanding LCD TV with LED Backlighting5
I bought this TV from our local BestBuy. I had been looking at the Samsung edge-lit LED/LCD line. The LG TV rep happened to be at the Fort Worth store, and he was really helpful. I’ve had the TV now for three four days, and I couldn’t be happier.

The TV is used in a well-lit living area, making the matte screen useful. I have looked at a LOT of TVs, and if you’re worried about the matte screen diminishing picture quality, don’t be. It kills reflections very effectively. The picture is gorgeous, regardless of source (LG BD390 Blu-ray player and a Dish Network 722 receiver in my case). Beautiful color, black blacks. Try the THX picture mode – it looks VERY realistic. My mom had a Panasonic plasma TV, and this is a better picture.

Worth buying just for the futuristic standby/on power light; can be disabled if you’re not as fond of it as I am.

The sound/lip synch issue with HDMI feeds has gotten a lot of attention. Using the TV audio, I had an initial problem with the Dish receiver till I tweaked the receiver’s settings. Same with BD390 player. Now all is well with either HDMI TV audio or external audio. I do think HD audio, especially with HDMI feeds, are problematic sometimes (too often). I understand that a solution is coming in the form of some sort of forced sync between HDMI audio and video in the HDMI standard. Hope so. With external audio, an audio delay box might be useful.

I am sitting here watching the Dish HD NBC Today show feed. It’s stunning. I am a biologist, and I recently watched the Blu-ray version of Planet Earth. It nearly brought me to tears, it was so gorgeous.

Buy and enjoy!

LIP SYNCH ISSUES RESOLVED !!4
I purchased this TV the day after Christmas from an on-line retailer. NOT AMAZON! Google “55LH90″ and you will find MUCH better prices than any here at Amazon.

I absolutely love this TV, although I think Samsung’s UNB558500 is a slightly better TV in the long run (the Samsung suffers from very noticeable “spotlighting” in the corners when the scene on screen is dark).

I chose the LH90 for the higher percentage of positive expert and user reviews and for the price. I got this TV delivered, brand-new in the box for $2000.00 (tax-free and shipping free). So a “no-brainer” for the final choice in TVs.

I have read both here and other review sites about the “lip-synch issue” – I have not seen this with my unit. I have an TiVo HD connected directly to the TV via a 1.3b HDMI connection and experience NO “lip synch” issues what so ever. I also have a older Series 2 dual tuner TiVo connected to my home theater amp via component cables, which is then “upconverted” to 1080p and connected to the TV via 1.3b HDMI cable; no lip sych issues this way either.

I would venture to say that LG solved this problem through it’s production cycle.

One thing I did not consider when I bought an LED HDTV (any LED tv has the following issue) is how black and white movies and TV shows look. Regardless if the movie/show is SD or HD, they have this eerie “too real” look to them. Think of what some of the old 50s and 60s black and white TV shows looked like when they were live – that is what they will look like on this TV. I watch alot of old B&W movies on Turner Classic Movies (both the SD and HD channels) and they look great but “too real” – just like live TV shows used to look. B&W movies were intentionally filmed with varying shades of blacks, grays and grainy whites (especially film noir ones) to give them contrast and depth and to illicit a certain mood. Watching them in LED HD really changes the look. It is taking me some time to adjust to this look. I previously watched these same movies on a 5 year old top-of-the-line JVC dlp HDTV and the movies looked sharper, like they were re-mastered, but not like they look in LED HD. Just something for you to consider.

Other than that, any video I am watching is astounding. As I write this review, I have a SD DVD of “March of the Penguins” playing on my blu-ray player (an LG BD390) and it is breath-taking!

For those tech-centric owners of this TV, there is a “hidden” (or “secret”) menu available on this TV. It will give you access to a number of options (audio, video etc) not available on the normal, limited menu. This menu is used by retailers when the TV is in “demo mode” to make the TV look as best as possible in thier stores; it is also used by technicians during service calls, screen calibration etc. Access of and use of this menu/options DOES NOT VOID your warranty. Google it for the steps to access the menu, well worth your time. I was able to get a mch better calibrated picture using this menu than the regular menu.

If you are considering buying this TV, do so. Worth every penny you spend; unless you are paying more than about $2700, if you are paying more, then buy the Samsung UNB558500 – a slightly better TV, but beware of the “spotlighting”

Customer Reviews:

Great TV if one can figure out how to use it.4
My family and I just love this TV, particularly for watching sports. We looked at a lot of LCD and Plasmas but saw none that gave us the sense of depth this one does. It is like 3D. Moreover, our family room is also a sun room during the day but the picture is just as strong in the day time as it is when the room is dark. The viewing angle is comparatively wide. We see no appreciable drop off when it is viewed at an angle. It is large enough that my wife can view it from the adjacent kitchen with ease.

Learning how to use its features and to set it up is another matter and that is the one gripe I have with the TV. Samsung only provides a four page manual which tells the owner nothing. Instead it includes a flash drive which contains a manual for its use but it took me over three weeks to realize what the flash drive was for. The manual does not show the available ports or how things are to be connected to the TV. I finally figured it out by trial and error and got the flash drive connected. Finding out how to use it however, was again a lot of trial and error. Once I was able to read the pages, it was hard to read, mostly grey on black (I hate black-you can’t see where anything is on black). Figuring how to page the manual on the TV isn’t easy. Samsung provides numerous steps to take but the user has to leave the Manual screen to go through the steps and unless the user writes out all the steps, it is a tiresome process to follow the steps.

So I tried using the flash drive on my computer. Well the manual is in a strange format so it will not open normally. Windows searched for a driver that would allow viewing the manual and found one which I downloaded and installed The one I found that worked was from IrFanView but one must also download all the plugins before it will work. However, when I opened the Manual, it was unprintable except with a screen capture utility.

That was more trouble than it was worth and it then dawned on me to go to the Samsung Support Center and see if there was a Manual that could be downloaded. Voila, the Manual was available in both PDF and Word formats but because the Manual is in three languages, it is 273 pages long. Just print the first 75 pages.

What I found is that with no difficulty I could run picture shows directly from either my camera or from a card reader. They come out beautifully. If I tried to print pictures that big, they would be grainy as all get out. But the pictures show in full size on the big screen in terrific detail and color and they have depth.

But I wish the USB ports were either on the side or the front where they are easily accessible. I intend to wall mount the screen but if I do I won’t be able to get to the connections which are on the back. And even then it is difficult to insert USB cords because the recess is so narrow.

We love this TV however, because of the lack of a printed manual and the location of the USB ports, I can only give it 4 stars.

Outstanding Picture Quality5
Pros: Excellent picture clarity, amazing colors, 120hz works exceptionally well with progressive scan (ie 720p, 1080p)

Cons: Expensive, backlighting (actually, it’s edge lighting on this model) is a little uneven in the corners. While watching credits at the end of a movie, you can see light and dark patches when the background is supposed to be solid black. This only occurs with really dark images and is a function of the TV being so thin.

Overall: I’ve had the TV for several months with no problems. I’m really happy with this purchase and would make it again.

Enjoying the Samsung UN55B6000 HDTV4
Image Quality and Connectivity:

This Samsung UN55B6000 is excellent technology and priced to move. We’ve got it hooked up to a cable box (MOT DCT 6200) via the 1 component connection and the image is sharp and crispy and the colors are vivid and bright.

We have an older PC connected via the VGA connection and the 3.5mm mini audio connection. Internet browser windows come up real sharp in 1920×1280i resolution. Sidebar: I’m also using wi fi and wireless mouse and keyboard.

Hi-res images look fantastic. This TV was assembled with web-browsing and computing in mind (Net widget, USB, JPEG and mp3 friendly) and Samsung has nailed it.

Online Support and Configuring the Cable Box:

Initially, the cable box was sending 720×480i to the TV. Fortunately I was able to find forums online with posts from a Samsung HD Tech and a cable co. employee that outlined the solution — turn off the cable box, hit the menu button (cable remote) and here you can select the higher (or different) resolution.

Additionally, the cable box required two power cycles for this (resolution) change to take effect but when it did I was viewing cable tv in 1920×1080i.

Using Samsung’s P.Size (Picture) Button:

When watching cable programming broadcast in HD, the 16:9 (aspect ratio) mode looks the best to me. For standard definition programming the Wide-Fit mode stretches the image a bit to fill the screen.

I’ve noticed some adjusting is required when flipping between channels, for example, sometimes CNN ticker text is below the screen and other times the Fox Sports Net FSN graphic is a bit above the screen. Perhaps this issue is addressed in the screen-fit mode, I’m not sure yet, I’ll have to mash a few more buttons. Overall, I give it 4.5 stars.

Full HD 1080P

full HD 1080P Full HD, or 1080p, contains 1.5 times more scanning lines than conventional HD TVs. More scanning lines mean more pixels, more details and a better picture. The new Samsung LCD TV with resolution that is approximately 2 times greater than conventional HDTVs, creating the most perfect picture imaginable.

Samsung’s 1080p panel uses a new high-speed liquid crystal to cut response time to 4ms. The fast response time, coupled with Samsung’s Auto Motion Plus 120Hz motion blur reduction technology dramatically reduces motion blur and judder.

Breakthrough LED Picture Quality

Compared to a traditional CCFL, LEDs produce darker blacks that appear endlessly deep to the eye. Whites also remain crisp and bright with vivid colors. The result is picture quality that measures up to the natural beauty of life. For instance, Samsung’s Wide Color Enhancer Pro feature lets consumers enjoy a broader color palette. The Ultra Clear Panel further allows the preservation of every detail even in brightly-lit, imperfect viewing conditions. This is done by effectively allowing more light to pass through the screen and simultaneously reducing reflections from ambient light. And with an adaptive “Natural” mode, Samsung’s LED HDTVs can combine the recognized brightness advantage of LCD displays with the cinema-like viewing experience of plasma displays by automatically optimizing picture settings.

Eco-Friendly

The benefits of using LEDs include not only improved picture quality, but also reduced power consumption levels to easily meet the stringent new Energy Star v3.0 guidelines. The LED modules are mercury-free, which makes for cleaner manufacturing and safer recycling when compared with backlight technologies currently available. In the LED HDTV line, energy consumption is reduced by 40 percent versus traditional LCD HDTVs of a similar size. The LED HDTVs also include a power indicator menu, and an optimized energy savings mode. In addition, these TVs require less material to manufacture and are thinner, reducing packing material and consumer waste. The smaller packaging allows for more units to be shipped and less fuel to be consumed at a time which potentially reduces Samsung’s carbon footprint.

Auto Motion Plus 120Hz

This technology doubles the frame rate from 60 to 120 frames per second (120Hz LCD panel) without repeating the same image to make more frames. Instead, the TV intelligently calculates the ‘middle’ image between frame A and frame B and inserts it in between (Auto Motion Plus 120Hz processor), making a fluid transition from one frame to the next. automotion graph

Touch of Color

Touch of Color In 2008, Samsung created its unique Touch of Color (ToC) design, which uses dual-injection molding to coat a translucent, colored surface to achieve an attractive crystalline appearance. The latest evolution of Samsung’s ToC design begins with a deep piano black bezel that fades into distinct chrome that finishes as light ruby highlights on the 7000 and 6000 Series LED HDTVs. The intensity of the color subtly changes depending upon the viewing angle, and further accentuates these TV’s slim bezels.

InfoLink

Touch of Color Up-to-the-minute access to weather, news, sports and stock information is just a cable and a click away through the HDTV’s Ethernet port and new InfoLink RSS service. An all-new user interface with digital contents management guide provides intuitive navigation and access to both internal and external content.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

Good printer5
This is my second KonicaMinolta printer and the best one yet. It warms up and prints in seconds instead of minutes like the old one. The print quality is great whether grapics or plain text. It does not do photos any better than any other laser printer, the surface has a strange sheen that still looks good if put behind glass or behind the plasctic cover of a photo album. This printer does not duplex, for about a hundred dollars more you can get the same printer with a duplexer. Get a good solid printer stand, when they say it weighs 90 pounds it is real.

Customer Reviews:

Flawed but otherwise great looking4
The bad: I’m not 100% sure but when I connected a component video cable to my previous projector, a mitsubishi hc1000 720p I did NOT get redish horizontal lines going through the viewed image. Nor did I occasionally get distorted skin tones. However, i did experience this with the Vivitek. Again, this is only with the component video cable. I happen to think that for viewing a digital cable box, its’ better to use component. In any case an HDMI cable is fantastic especially for viewing Blu-Ray or HD DVD. This issue with rainbow effect, is not as slight as they make it out to me. Maybe I’m one of those people who is more sensitive to it. My wife said she sees it too but only when she makes an effort to see it, like quickly removing her eyes from the screen. Any way the effect is definintely there and I’ve already surpassed more than 50 hours of viewing but I would otherwise exchange it for a projector that does not have this effect.
The Good; Other than these “flaws” Just pop in a blu-ray, especially one of the newer movies and prepare to be awed ! Between the luminance, the resolution and the color, It truly makes for a satisfying viewing experiance. I watched the movie The public Enemies on blu ray and it was like, true home theater experience if not better than at the movies. The Roku movies (to long to explain what this is but for those who have it, you know what I mean) in HD also look fantastic, but again only the newer movies blow you away. Older movies that have been converted to HD somehow and do not make as good an impact. In summary, take away the fault when viewing through a component video, take away the dreaded rainbow effect, and take away the fan noise (it’s not overwhelming but it is noticable, I have mine cealing mounted so that helps a bit) and focus on the HD or Blue ray viewed movies, and this projector is to die for.

Somewhere over the Rainbow3
If you are a newbie like me, go look up the rainbow effect for dlp sets. That is the problem here. Basically, this unit uses a 3x color wheel meaning that you can these rainbows all over the place in 1080p content. And frankly, aren’t you here because you want 1080p?

This unit is better than the Optima H20 that you are likely also looking at in every way except what I just mentioned, but you’re going to have to take that hit. I’m returning this unit now for the Optima. Such a shame. It was almost perfect.

Excellent sub $1k 1080p projector!!5
Let me get this straight to you. If you’re trying to buy your first projector, just go buy it or watch it in action. You don’t have to look at all the negativity surrounding this projector. I really was pushed away from this projector because of all these rainbow effect comments and I was leaning toward the Optoma H20 because of the 4 color segmant wheel which is supposed to be faster and produces less rainbow effect than the Vivitek H1080FD. But you have to know that This Vivitek projector has higher contrast than the optoma H20. That’s what really matters to me. I’m glad I took the Vivitek route. I really can’t say anything bad about the Optoma HD20 since I don’t have it, but I can tell you that my Vivitek is amazing as my first ever projector and I’m totally satisfied with it.

I unboxed the projector and hooked it to my PS3 using HDMI cable and projected the image on a light yellow flat wall from about 6 feet away, from that distance and using the maximum zoom, you’ll get around 80″ diagonal picture. I played Call of Duty: Modern warfare 2 and the picture was excellent, I really forgot that I was projecting the image on a wall that is not fully white and the color of the picture seemed to be correct!!!…. I was afraid of being a rainbow effect guy, but that wasn’t the case. I really didn’t suffer or noticed any rainbow effect. only when I turn my head to the left or to the right fast, I kinda see some vertical lines of primary colors which I think is what people refere to as rainbow effect. I invited my 3 nephews to play MW2 on split screen mode. we played for 4 hours and no one complained from the rainbow effect or any headache. So there you have it, rainbow effect is either overrated or only few few people suffer from it.

Closing the rainbow effect chapter and moving on to the performance of the projector. I was expecting some lag or frame rate drop from this projector when playing fast paced games, but I really did not encounter any, the gameplay was as smooth as silk. The picture projected was vivid and crisp, although there are minimum adjustment to the picture quality from your projector, but you really aren’t going to need them because the presets are very accurate, you still can play with the contrast, brightness and hue.
Ease of installation is an issue here, this projector is not flexible, it’s not an expensive projector so you’d expect such features to be stripped out, there is no vertical or horizontal shift to the picture. That means you’re going to need to install or place your projector in the middle of the intended projected image. That means if you’re going to ceiling mount it, you have to get rid of whatever is hanging from your ceiling.

The only real drawback of this projector is the black levels, if you’re picky and have the budget, this is not for you. But if you’re just like me,, someone who’s got his first projector, who’s not too picky about the darkest black in his projected image, then you will not care about this at all, you’ll just be amazed at the performance of this projector.
the noise was very low, I was sitting 3 feet away from this projector an I couldn’t hear anything.

PROS: Vivid & crisp picture, quiet and very cheap.
CONS: black is kinda dark gray.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

I’m waiting for my 120″ Elite screen to arrive and once I install it and ceilling mount my projector I’ll be able to provide you with my feed back on a bigger projected image.

[UPDATE]
Just got my 120″ screen installed!! The projector was able to fill the entire screen with a very bright picture.Watched a couple of blu ray movies and some SD videos. I wasn’t expecting the SD feed to be viewable, but it was very good. Anyway, you don’t want to consume your lamp watching SD videos,, this is a 1080p Projector, so you better not put alot of milage on your bulb watching SD videos on a 120″ screen. Anyway, I was very happy with my projector and it has not let me down yet. Everything I expected from such price range for a projector was met. I love my little vivitek H1080FD.

Nice Unit – Could be Better4
We use the Garmin Astro for K9 SAR. We put it on the dogs & record the areas they searched. The unit is nice, but frustrating to operate. It is advertised as being like the Garmin 60C series, but the operating system (menu screens) are very different and have much less functionality than the 60C’s. I would have wanted to carry just one unit, but alas, I carry both because the screen functionalty on the Astro does not have features the 60CS has. The screen sequence for starting & stopping recording the dog tracks is very cumbersome and confusing. The harness that comes with the unit is worthless – dangerous really. It is a velcro ‘vest’ that is supposed to fit snugly around the dog’s chest. It has to fit snuggly the way its designed in order for it to stay on the dog . . . but that snugness also causes the dog to not be able to breathe properly – for a working dog – that could cause major medical emergency. All of us who have them have designed some other attachment method to the dog’s regular working harness. Garmin could save some money by removing the harness fromt the package & putting in a simple/better way to attach it to another harness. This all sounds bad . . . the unit works pretty well actually, but these pesky details cause it to be used less often that I would like.
