Great Alternative to the XBR series5
I received this TV a week ago and I am in love. This TV has the Bravia Engine 3, not 2 like the spec sheet on this page says, so for the money, you are getting a top notch product. SD signals look like crap, because they are crap, its not your TV’s fault, its your cable provider, but HD looks amazing. I have not been having any problems with the black levels, as described in other Sony reviews, and the colors are rich and vibrant. Plenty of inputs on this set. I currently have my macbook (watching HULU and other video streams, picture looks great) via DVI to HDMI, a PS3 (which is giving me the true 1080p experience for Blue Ray Discs, which is what I base my color and black observations on) and a HD cable box also taking up another HDMI port. I still have not even used 1/4 of the inputs provided. The cinema mode when watching movies adds a warmth to the picture that gives you a movie theatre experience without the “true white” LCD overexposure.

If you are looking for a GREAT tv at a semi-affordable price forget about Samsung and Panasonic, Sony is where its at for all around value, oh and you don’t get that glossy screen which drives me nuts! Sound could be a little fuller, but by no means is it bad. Besides, if you are going to spend the money on a nice set, you might as well get a nice stereo system as well.

PROS- GREAT PICTURE, GOOD VALUE, GREAT COLORS, GOOD MODE SELECTIONS (PICTURE), LOTS OF ADJUSTABLE ITEMS, PLENTY OF INPUTS
CONS- AUDIO SOMEWHAT LOW, 240HZ ADVANTAGES REALLY HAVE YET TO BE SEENS AS THIS ONLY AFFECTS INPUTS THAT THE TV CAN CHANGE OR UPRES (IE CABLE).

ALL IN ALL I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TV TO ANYONE SHOPPING FOR A NEW FLATSCREEN.

A great TV5
Terrific picture, especially on the HDTV channels. Controls, etc., are straightforward and intuitive. Sound is just a tad softer than I’d prefer, but it’s not bad. Could easily hook a secondary sound system to it, but haven’t bothered. My previous TV, an Olevia 32″, was the same width, but with side-by speakers it lost a full 8″ of screen size. The Bravia is exactly the same width, only a couple of inches taller, and delivers a 25% larger screen. The 240hz upgrade is definitely noticeable. If you’re on HD, it’s the only way to fly. Plan to hook it to my laptop and take advantage of online TV-movie selections. This set also connects to the Internet, if you have the correct cables or signal devices. That’s on the agenda, too.

Don’t fear the delivery service, my experience was excellent: They arrived when promised, brought it upstairs, unpacked it, hooked it up, and carted away all the trash. Buying via Amazon beats going to a big-box store and having to do all that yourself — and the price I paid was more than $200 *below* my local big-box store for the same TV. Free delivery, too. Couldn’t be happier.

3D Peering into Look – Terrific PQ Details and Blacks5
Received our 40″ Z5100 one week ago via Onecall Amazon Sale – double boxed via Fedex tracking/timeliness. Extremely happy with the results. I own four LCD TV’s and a long term member of AVSForum.

Was able to replace a 32″ Sharp with side speakers and gain 8″ viewing for my wife’s primary viewing in the Master Bedroom Armoire and while I was torn between it and the B750 it’s a damn good thing I went with the Sony as I found the Samsung would not have fit the space.

To my surprise when I set everything up was how reflective the Sony was while off – not full matte like my Sharps but that has no impact when the TV is turned on at all. Damn the TV is black and semi-reflective Off but a beauty when displaying.

No gaming is done on this TV and so I won’t report on anything in that regards and I won’t assist with calibrations since my viewing preference is a vivid panel.

I decided on this panel after studying panels for the past 6 months and finally viewing the XBR9 and the Z5100 next to Samsung B750/B650 panels. As great as the Samsungs were I was unable to get that peering into PQ DEPTH that I experienced on the new Sony panels – plus I feared the wife may complain about reflections on the Samsungs after having none for 4.5 yrs on the Sharp. I was repeatedly impressed with this immersiveness on these two new Sony panels as I am in my Home.

I popped in Mamma Mia Blu-Ray and it was fantastic – the Mediterranean Sea color and clarity was eye popping and I turned on AMP and when you haven’t experienced it before it’s sort of strange to have that Live Camera view and soap opera look – I prefer the theater look but it’s nice to play with but something one can use according to their preference.

The blacks on this are wonderful trumping the 4.5 yr old it replaced easily.

I spent hours going from the bedroom to my main 57″ 3.5 year old Sharp and I used Food Network HD to cross compare since they constantly zoom into the cooking experience and it’s easy to see PQ details on that channel. Again my in-store HD Viewing with 3D depth peering into of the Sony trumped my 3.5 yr Technology on my Sharp easily. The friggin clarity on HD on these cook-off’s was simply amazing on the Sony and it tells me Sony may have a kick butt 65″ when it debuts with BE3 on the W5100 in August. My Sharp had a flatter smoother look – still looked great and the 57″ size delivers alot of WoW but the details on the Z5100 was stunning. The Z5100 and XBR9 are the first LCD’s I’ve seen that could match or exceed the PQ details of the SXRD I owned previous with HD.

Also, I carefully watched for flashlighting and clouds and saw ZERO – simply BLACK – BLACK – BLACK!

The only negative I can report is Turdvision SD – it is what it is – a TURD!

I’m used to viewing HD 90+% of the time and so I’ll always tolerate it for my channels that have not transitioned yet but I don’t buy my TV’s for SD – after all some SD channels can look quite good while others are crapola no matter the panel especially after growing accustomed to HD at six times the PQ.

The irony is that I’ll rarely view this TV regularly as my wife and I have very different tastes and I have a sleep disorder where I only view the Sony occasionally after setting it up but it gave me a yardstick to make a move to a 65″ > in the future with it’s PQ Depth, Details, and Black Levels and hopefully I can provide her this larger 40″ panel in the same space a 32″ would only fit with First Rate PQ for 8+ years and she’s quite happy and takes away the guilt when I jump to a 65″ as she’ll have the Z5100 for regular viewing and then the BIG HT 65″ or my 57″ for HT immersion as size does have it’s benefits to get HT immersion with Blu-Rays especially.

IMO Ten/Ten Panel Processing, BE3, 240Hz, and the 100K:1 CR and the maturity of Sony Bravia Series is now returning rewards in the “Z5100″ and XBR9. Enjoy!:D

ALSO — Most importantly with the achilles Heal of LCD — I see no Friggin HAZE!!! The Samsungs (B750/B650) are still outstanding IMO also but if you cannot handle the reflective nature and ambient lighting issues a viewing room may interfere with PQ these Sony panels trump the Samsungs IMO and with a little patience the prices should drop also.

Extremely Happy and look forward to the Sony 65″ W5100 in August!!! :)

Good to Excellent, Significantly better than CCFL?5
I originally ordered the Samsung LN40B650 and was fairly certain that I had made a good choice. I don’t know why but I starting second guessing my decision, which led me to review the Samsung LED LCD televisions. While the reviews were not extremely glowing, the Samsung UN40B6000 looked like it could better the picture of the CCFL LN40B650 and I canceled the order for CCFL and went with the 6000 series LED television. One of the “cons” of the edge-placed LED televisions is a noted lack of screen uniformity but that is for larger screen sizes and I thought the 40 inch screen would not be as prone to that problem.

Some thoughts and observations:

1. The clear screen is very good – I have 3 windows, and a bright ceiling light; there are no reflection problems. In some of my earlier posted Amazon photos, a window reflection was evident on the screen, but not really noticeable in real-life viewing. I found, however, if I looked for the reflection, I could see it. I reshot the photos in lower light to better illustrate the performance of the UN40b6000. The first photo shows how good the screen image is when viewed directly on; this quality remains solid to 15 – 20 degrees of center. The image does lighten but I disagree that it rapidly deteriorates to poor quality even up to a viewing angle of 45 degrees; it’s still a good image.
2. Out of the box the picture is good, but after using the settings recommended by CNET, with some slight personal adjustments, the picture for many Blu Ray pictures are as good as I’ve seen.
3. Despite the stated mega contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1, the gamma setting needed to be adjusted to at least +2 or +3 (highest) values to keep dark scenes properly contrasted. One interesting fact regarding the off-center viewing is that contrast for dark lit scenes actually improves.
4. The sound is NOT bad; the two UN40B6000 rear/downward firing speakers in custom mode produces respectable sound for a television set. Now, if you want theater-quality surround sound, then this TV is going to fall far short of such expectation, but what set would not? My suggestion is to go into sound mode; select custom, select graphic equalizer (set 100HZ to max; 300HZ to 3/4 range); set SRS Trusurround HD to “On” and give a listen. If you’re still not happy, buy a sound bar.
5. The backlit remote is nice for nighttime viewing and is fairly user friendly.
6. The Samsung Blu Ray and UN40B6000 automatically recognize one another which may play a role in the exceptional picture that is produced.

The bottom line is that UN40B6000 produces a very good to excellent picture, and the sound is decent for a television set – is it worth the couple of hundred dollars more than its CCFL counterpart? I cannot say with certainty, but my hunch is that it is. However, where its performance may exceed say the LN40B650 is most likely limited to direct viewing +/- 20 degrees off center. After that the CCFL set may hold an advantage.

Update 9/25: I have read the reviews regarding limited viewing angles, but I have not noticed the dramatic degradation that has been observed by others. For comparison, I have placed 3 images under typical dark viewing conditions (note all camera settings are in static manual mode, no photo editing performed). The series of photos uploaded on Amazon do not come close to the actual picture on the screen in terms of quality, but they do demonstrate relative difference in picture color and contrast as the viewing angle is moved from center – please note photo placement captions. Overall, I am VERY happy with the UN40B6000 performance and have every intention of keeping it. The picture is outstanding when viewed directly, and may diminish with increased viewing angle, but it’s more of an excellent to good, than a good to terrible. My wife keeps complaining that the picture is too good – that it’s like watching a movie being made instead of viewing a movie – it does not make sense to me either.

UPDATE 1/22/10: In the comment section I was asked the set’s height with stand. When I performed the required action by using a metal measuring tape positioned on the right side of the TV, the set went into store demo mode that displayed features of the TV – I needed Samsung technical support to get me out of the stored program. On the plus side – at 23:00, Friday night, I had a technician within minutes. Samsung did not understand why it happened but it did, and they directed me out of the program. FYI, I measured over the front buttons on the right side of the TV and I now believe the metal tape simultaneously contacted two buttons which initiated the store demo program – do not take a measurement in that fashion! If for some reason the store display comes on, from menu, go to “plug and play” and advance to section that has choices “store demo” or “home use” select “home use” to exit the program.

We bought this TV because it had the best picture, period. The rest is, as they say, gravy. That said, there’s a lot of gravy.

There’s some control of the Panasonic receiver/DVD player through the TV
Photos on USB thumb drive look gorgeous

Cons:
The Ethernet connection is nice, but it should do more: I want access to my Ethernet HP Media Vault, and the Internet offering (USA Today news stories, weather, and stocks) is meager
One of the PIP options must be to the RF coaxial input

The cons are minor, especially since I wouldn’t have cared or noticed if the features weren’t included at all.

Lovely picture5
We just upgraded from a 10yr old huge tube tv to this. Granted that anything would be awsome in comparison, the picture is fabulous, its very light, thin, and energy efficient. It is weird not having any buttons on the tv itself, but I can kind of see why. Since it is so thin, the wire placement in the back is a bit strange, or different I should say from the monster tube tv we had. We had to get a HMDI cable to go with it to connect our DVD player, but other then that, no other item was needed. If you are going to mount it on the wall, you will need to purchase that separately. Luckily the DVD player we had was new enough to be an upconvert to Hi-def.

The picture looks like you are standing next to the film crew as they are filming the show. It’s very strange. Even Kungfu Panda looked more 3 dimensional if that is possible.

Great projector…great price5
We use this for our youth room at church. Clear, crisp picture; easy to see, even with florescent lights on. Arrive on time & best price by far from many other places I checked. Haven’t used the 3D feature yet. Would definitely recommend it to anyone!

Good other than Remote4
This is a great projector for me so far. However the remote doesn’t work very well. you have to be close and directly behind the projector for it to work. Other than that it is great.

Great picture but…2
120hz is not available unless your source is putting out 120hz. other 120hz displays will up sample 60hz signals and call it motion enhance or something like that. also despite turning off auto source, a feature that will start searching thru all inputs for a signal, the projector still goes to its bright white logo screen whenever it thinks its lost a signal. doesnt sound too bad right? except the fact that nearly 1/3rd of tv commercials seem to trigger this feature. so youll just be watching tv and all the sudden a bright white screen with birds pops up for 2 seconds…and then back to regularly scheduled programing brought to you by your friends at ViewSonic.

take my advice, spend a hundred bucks more on an actual theater projector or maybe even something thats used and in this price range. i exchanged this for the Optoma HD66 720P, will report back after i get some time in with it.

Not happy2
When the factory CD player in my 350Z recently went out, I stopped by a local car stereo installation shop where they recommended this unit. Now that I’ve owned it for a couple of weeks, I wish I had researched it first. It has a lot of features, sounds good and has a very clear display. However, I feel those positives are outweighed by a large number of annoyances.

* It takes about 20 seconds to start up.
* It randomly reboots (which aggravates the slow start up).
* If you play music from your iPhone and don’t disconnect it between turning off and turning your car back on, it will resume playing from where it left off for about 10 seconds and then go totally silent. You have to disconnect the iPhone and then reconnect it to get the sound back (and that doesn’t always work).
* USB storage device options are limited. It only supports FAT16 and FAT32 partitions, and only up to 32GB in size.
* In addition, it only supports up to 255 folders and 255 files per folder. That may seem like a lot, but I was planning on attaching a large solid-state drive to the unit with a copy of my entire CD collection, which far exceeds those limits.
* It only supports up to 320Kbps WMA encoding, and not lossless. I cannot listen to anything in my Windows Media library without converting it.
* The user interface often requires you to navigate through multiple menus/screens to perform common functions. For example, if you are playing music while the navigation screen is up and you want to change tracks, you have to navigate back to the AV source screen first. This is very distracting while driving, and all the more annoying given that the current song’s title is shown at the bottom of the navigation screen. Why didn’t they put a few common buttons (forward, back, pause) next to the song title?

Overall, I cannot recommend this unit. I have reconfirmed that all of these problems and limitations exist with the latest firmware versions as of Dec. 18, 2009 (GPS version 3.20 and player version 1.8).

Feature Galore!5
I must agree with others who say this device is complicated, but several readings of the manual and some fiddling bring you tremendously good results! I added a rear-view camera, XM radio, a 5-channel alpine amplifier, 10″ Alpine subwoofer and infinity 3-way speakers and WOW! What a sound!. The unit has superb voice contrlol and amazingly diverse sound controls. I can play files from a USB hard drive and my iphone/ipod, including music videos. The video on the 7″ screen is awesome! The Garmin software is wonderful – I have three other Garmin untis so it was very easy for me to master. The only glitch I have had is that my ipod loses connectivity sometimes. I still don’t know why, but a simple cable reconnect fixes it. I also love to have video podcasts on in the car.

DEFINITELY worth the money!5
Before getting the 9140, I had a Kenwood KVT-910. I have to say, Kenwood has outdone itself yet again. It’s not perfect, but no unit will be. There are pluses and minuses to all the units out there. If you are searching for the perfect one, then you will be searching for a long time. I don’t have anything bad to say about Pioneer (or any other Navigation HU out there), but all I know is that I am completely satisfied with the DNX-9140.

Here are some pros and cons.

PROS:
1) Excellent DVD picture
2) Garmin navigation
3) Voice-control is very accurate.
4) Tons of features. I probably won’t use 1/2 of them, but it’s good to know that they’re there if I do want to.
5) Multi-angle tilt comes in handy.
6) Touchscreen is very responsive
7) Can easily hook up to headrest units in the back seat (I got the Vizualogic Roadtrip and it works great)

CONS:
1) More expensive than other in-dash DVD/Navigation headunits out there.
2) User interface does take time to get used to and learn
3) My biggest gripe: Can only hook up 1 item from Sirius, XM, and HD Radio. It’s bad enough that we have to buy extra modules to use these features, but only being able to hook up one when the 8120 can hook up more?!?! Fail!

Great system, Handles music especially well. The box came with a couple different options for speaker mounts which was nice and I love the look of the sub. Excellent speaker construction/design. I ended up using it for a smaller room and in retrospect it could fill a larger space easily. Overall very happy with the speakers.

I waited a few months after purchasing this tv, before attempting a review.

MY experiences/opinions are (scale of 1-10, 10 being the best):

Handling, ability to move to desired location: 10 … light, easy for 1 person to move,maneuver, install on stand

Easiness to initially setup/get useful asap: 10 … You really do NOT need the directions, but they are excellent

Connections amount,availability, setup: 10 … I have cable, a PS3, and Xbox360, dvd … too easy if you ask
me !

Viewing: 9 … great from even extreme angles. Adjustments in the menu DO fine tune your individual needs.
: the 1080P shines in action movies, sports, and especially video games … resolution is phenomenal !
: I’ve experienced NO bleeding of colors or blurriness in high speed transitions

Audio: 7 … OK at best, but I bought it for its viewing capabilities, NOT expecting a ‘Bose’ audio capacity.
One of its menu items allows you to keep advertising volumes the same as network broadcast volumes…
Mine does NOT function that way… commercials still too loud

I have it (easily connected to) enhanced by my stereo system, so this is a wash as far as I am concerned
when wanting to listen to a Nascar race, music concert, or other venue.

Price: I did a LOT of homework, and found the price very acceptable in comparison to other tv’s boasting
similar if not identical capabilities… I bought mine on sale at Best Buy, but lucked into a good price

Green : Not much heat coming out of the uppermost exhaust vents

My end result: A great buy.

After owning a SONY HD tv, and experienced their lack of customer attention/satisfaction… a
lack of callback on their part force me to forever part with them as a trusted manufacturer.
In my opinion, their (SONY) trusted name is forever trashed/overpriced… if they will not

I’m watching baseball on the LN40B530 as I write this, and am blown away by the crisp picture and wonderful colors. The sound is fine as far as my family is concerned. I did make some adjustments to the equalizer, which improved how it sounded right out of the box. I walked past the “tv wall” at a local Best Buy, and to me this TV looked as good as the ones in the $2,000-and-up range. As far as its being “only” 60hz, it looked better than some of the 120hz ones. Maybe if you’re a heavy gamer that’s an important consideration, but nobody here is. Our previous TV was a Hitachi plasma EDTV that we thought was great, but this is a big improvement. Can’t wait to see a blue-ray disc on it. I wonder if the previous reviewer had a defective one. None of their complaints are true of this unit at all.

Great LCD!!5
I this is my 2nd LCD and the picture quality is amazing! With 60,000:1 contrast ratio, the colors just POP and make everything look realistic. Standard definition picture quality is good(i.e. standard cable), but HD quality is amazing. My last set was a philips and the colors on people’s faces didn’t quite look realistic but this samsung, everything looks realistic. The picture settings out of the box are pretty good but with a little adjustment(you can find calibration settings online) the PQ is amazing. The only compliant I have with this TV is the sound which is more than acceptable though.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience. If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

The only problem is that the radio station frequencies are compatible with the USA and not Middle East FM station (even number scan)!!!!
