The TH-BA3 is a dual wireless soundbar system. The 280-watt, 5.1-channel surround sound system includes a soundbar, wireless subwoofer and wireless rear speaker kit. (The surround speakers are wired to the rear receiver that transmits wirelessly with the soundbar.) The soundbar contains four speakers – one each for the left and right main channels and two for the center channel. Also built into the sound bar is the power amplifier, surround decoding, system controls and the transmitter for the wireless surround speakers. It offers one analog and two optical digital inputs and decodes Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby ProLogic II surround signals.

About a month ago I started the research process for upgrading my entertainment system in my living room. I was operating on a 37″ Sony tub television, Panasonic surround sound and Panasonic DVD player. Functioning was sufficient on all pieces, but I wanted to enhance my space and experience with a system overhaul. This surround sound system caught my eye as it functions as a soundbar (which I really wanted mounted below my television) and still offers my the 5.1 surround sound speakers wirelessly.

I was frustrated and the few people that had reviewed this product and became slightly leary that it was not going to meet my needs as no one seemed to be buying it. I cannot express how wrong I was. I finished my hookup on Saturday (everything for my television and soundbar have been wired through the wall using the Datacomm recessed wall plates) and it looks fantastic. The soundbar is currently mounted on the wall below the television which I like as I am using my new 55″ Vizio as my HDMI point and its optical audio out (Toslink) to the soundbar.

Sound is fantastic on all three settings (Dolby Digital, PCM, and Dolby ProLogic II). The fade to mute function is interesting as I have not seen this on a surround unit before. Wireless functionality seems flawless in its transmission (I currently have my subwoofer under an end table and the wireless receiver mounted behind my couch on the wall – JVC customer support was fantastic answering questions about link of sight and distance from soundbar!).

Shortcomings are hard to come by on this unit, but I feel I should touch on them to provide a thorough review. I do not like that when using the dimmer function on the soundbar the red indicator lights do not dim with the blue power light. Also, my Panasonic surround sound system offered a slightly more powerful surround speaker experience, but the output on these speakers is more than enjoyable enough. It would have been nice if JVC would have provided some mounting equipment for the soundbar as it took some looking to find something that would both hold the weight of the soundbar and fit into the four mounting holes on the unit.

In all, I will be recommending this to others looking for a wireless option for surround sound. I hope people begin to see the benefits to such a unit and the quality of the JVC TH-BA3. It is a great addition to my home entertainment system.

Great answer to the Vizio and Sony Sound bar systems!5
I have been waiting for a system like this with REAL surround capability. The issue with the Vizio system is that is didn’t have a rear channel, the issue with the Sony you had to spend and extra 200-300 to get extra speakers, wireless somethings to patch it all together and it wasn’t “native” to the system. When the JVC TH-BA3 came out, I KNEW I wanted it and it would be perfect for my small house.

and boy was I right! I had this thing set up under my 42 inch 240Mhz Vizio (sorry crappy Vizio soundbar) in less than 1 hour), synched with the sub and the wireless and ready to go. I watched “The Patriot” and was surprised as the sound. Then I turned on some reagular TV…. that is where I got the REAL surprise! My wife and I watched the show Psych and during a scene where everyone was in the police station, the surround sound came alive. It was like we were in the middle of the station! You could hear EVERYTHING! Typewriters, people shuffling paper, people walking around. It was crazy! But the BEST part was YOU COULD STILL HEAR THE MAIN CHARACTERS TALKING!

My advice:

Do the setup and set the speakers up properly (measure your distances and enter them in as recommended).
If you cable provider and blue ray outputs to PCM mode …. USE IT!!! This receiver will take uncommpressed PCM (which is the “real” sound before all of the encoding and re-coding”). Set you bluray to the highest bit-rate (like an mp3 song 192 vs 90)… you will get rain drops instead of just “rain” all around you…. It is awesome.

Inconvenient placement of the screw hole in the back of the surround but I was able to take the cord off the end caps can get the speaker wire through the bracket on the stands I bought (sanus)

Should offer mounting solution for front speakers.

Holes for mounting wireless reciever upside town, which mankes “JVC” upside down… dumb.

Dimmer dims blue light but not the red ones on the front of unit….

A top grade effort4
The AH-D7000 is the newest flagship reference headphone from Denon, a company usually known for their home theater electronics. Denon made a mark in the headphone market a couple of years ago when they introduced the AH-D1001, AH-D2000, AH-D5000 providing a well-rounded sound quality in the crowded market of premium headphone makers like Sennheiser, AKG, Audio Technica.

What I noted in my D2000/D1001 review is they are good headphones which have no glaring faults. They tend to have a very musically pleasing sound quality that doesn’t dull the performance quality of the music, with their authoritative bass, clear and sparkly highs, but they don’t overdo it either. They seem to do justice to most music types. So this “ultra reference” model carries on that tradition. The MSRP of this headphone is $999, and that puts it in the “ultra-expensive” category, but fortunately, you can actually find it discounted fairly steeply sometimes which brings the price down to earth a bit (but still orbiting). The main difference in this model over the lesser but similar wood-construction D5000 is an improved driver (higher efficiency) and a better finished wood earcup (now polished finish and nickel lettering that can’t wear off). Looking at the spec sheets, there isn’t much to differentiate it from the D5000 model to justify the $300 premium. Oh yes, but you do get a nicer box: A cardboard affair with leather-like panels, with a cloth material covering the main storage cradle. You don’t even get an adapter to plug the ¼” plug into the 1/8″ jack of portable devices, which I guess sends the message, don’t even bother using these with your iPod.

Ok, enough with the small talk.

Is this thing worth $1000? In many ways, no. On the surface, it’s three times more expensive than the very competent AH-D2000 model which I reviewed and gave five stars to. For the extra money, you get a nicer box and the luxurious look of the polished wood cups. You get a less unruly cable which is stated to be of higher quality. But the headphone is still `Made In China’, so it’s not as if you are paying Japanese craftsmen descended from a long line of great Asian artisans to craft your headphone. The headband and swivel arm hardware is basically the same as far as I can tell. Even the ear pad itself looks and feels about the same. The difference between these and the AH-D5000 is even less apparent, as the D5000 is also made of high quality wood earcups. While you can easily justify that the D5000 costs more than the D2000 due to the solid wood earcups (rigidity is good to prevent resonances) the D7000 doesn’t really seem to go much farther than the D5000 to justify that it costs almost 50% more. Besides the minor appearance differences, the only real tangible difference mentioned in the marketing blurbs is that the D7000 has a stronger magnet. If you try these headphones, you will find they mostly sound similar, the familiar sound signature clearly indicate that they are all from Denon, you won’t be mistaking these for the warm polite sound of a Sennheiser, or the more clinical sound of some AKGs, or the energetic snappy bright sound of a Grado Labs model.

But hey, what are you REALLY getting in terms of the sound quality?

Since the D7000 has the same basic design as the D2000, I will say that they do sound similar in quite a few ways. The bass is strong and deep. Some people think the bass is too strong and uncontrolled, more of a flatulent sound than true accurate bass, but I disagree. The bass is strong to be sure, but I feel it’s very well controlled. Maybe the fact that I have a big head helps, as these headphones are known to fit loosely, but on my head, they feel relatively stable and secure, but still supremely comfortable. But here’s where one difference starts to be apparent as you compare the two. The D7000’s bass quality is more punchy, more tuneful, seems to have no lower frequency limit, but still has good damping or control…like listening to a high end stereo system with a carefully manually equalized Velodyne DD-18 subwoofer that costs thousands. Whereas the D2000 has very good bass that is missing in some other brands’ models, the D7000 takes it up a notch further. And then there are the highs, the D7000 seems to be more pristine, just slightly clearer and more detailed through, just a bit more sparkle overall. Again, these are pretty subtle differences overall, but they are there if you listen carefully, have a good system, and have good recordings that can highlight the differences. Other things like the soundstaging (placement of instruments/staging of the music) is pretty much similar; the D7000 has a richer, bigger overall sound in general

Where does that leave the D5000? The differences between the D2000 and D7000 can be somewhat subtle already, but the D5000 and D7000 are even smaller. I can notice that the D5000 does feel like a middle ground, the bass isn’t as punchy or tight as the D7000, and the highs aren’t as well controlled as the D7000. What does this come down to: I’ll admit it, the D7000 is, like most higher end audio gear, a clear case of diminishing returns. You are paying a premium to get Denon’s best effort, and luxury construction and presentation. The actual physical and engineering differences don’t really reflect the price differential. The sonic differences are subtle for the most part, if I was blindfolded, I don’t think I would be able to predict that I could identify which was which 100% of the time. But does that mean it’s a waste of money? I would say no to that. If you take headphone listening seriously like I do, already spent good money building up a good system, a headphone like this just rounds out your listening experience. Even though it’s diminishing returns to buy a headphone like this, I do appreciate that these do noticeably improve on the excellent D2000’s which I loved and cherished for a year before I upgraded to these. Even though I describe the differences as subtle, I do appreciate the differences that I can hear.

Overall, these headphones has a completeness to the sound. The bass is indeed strong, and in fact, if you aren’t use to listening to truly full range loudspeakers, you might find that these headphones do seem to go *way* over the top with their bass, and may seem to drown out the midrange compared to what you are used to. However, that doesn’t mean I am implying that every other headphone is wrong and these are right though. If I was to try to analyze it, I think the D7000’s do seem to go about 10-15% over the top with their bass and treble energy, but for me, it’s erring on the side of offering a “fun” sound but without going overboard. I wouldn’t master music with these headphones, but I’d still select these over many other headphones in their price range in terms of their overall musical accuracy. Every headphone has particular strengths and weaknesses. I do find these headphones are great for popular music, jazzy nightclub performances, electronic/dance, big band, but slightly less good for huge orchestral pieces (partly due to the closed nature, they sound a bit less 3 dimensional compared to the best open style headphones). As closed headphones, these don’t leak that much sound.

So the bottom line is: for the most part, these headphones don’t make any sense, but if your love of music runs deep, you like sound that is biased toward “fun” over purely clinically accurate sound quality, don’t mind paying a bit more to get that luxurious look, then these are as good of choice as any other $1000 headphone that I can think of. The only other thing I should mention is that these headphones do have a very slight tendency to emphasize the upper midrange. Depending on the vocalist, there is just a tad bit of edginess to the voice. This could be a limitation of my system (as it usually is in most cases), but it’s something to watch out for if you are sensitive to treble artifacts. All in all, the treble has a slightly more lively sound than average headphone I’ve owned over the years.

For the most part, I don’t think I really want to try to convince anybody that these headphones are worth every penny, and that you shouldn’t consider the cheaper D1001/D2000/D5000 models. You should because those are all great choices in their respective price ranges. I think these D7000’s can compete against any other $1000 headphone, but like all things in the top 3% percentile pricewise, it’s made for the fanatic or hobbyist that doesn’t mind paying big dollars for the privilege of owning a top model to squeeze out that extra 3% of improvement. For the most part, I think the D2000 is a sweet spot and you should probably check these out first if you just want an enjoyable, excellent sounding, high quality, comfortable set of cans for general use.

Stunningly good5
Its the bass. that’s where it starts. No other phones have bass exyension like this. Not boomy or sloppy, but it goes all the way down. No other phones can do this.

Without sacrificing magical transparency and extension, smoothly through the midrange to the extreme highs, the foundation, the low end, of these cans, more than any other, creates a magical soundstage. If its on the recording, you’ll hear it, unattenuated, flat, all the way to 20Hz. I’ve never experienced this in cans before. These Denon 7000s can create the impressive, sometimes shocking impact that I’ve only heard before from huge speaker systems like Pipedreams or big Wilsons. The way Pipedreams can pressurize a room, so these Denons can pressurize your soundfield, but they manage to sound totally natural doing so. I’ve never heard better cans. Compared to Audio-Technica W5000, they seem not to have the excess air on top like the A-Ts, but the A-Ts are so bass shy. Sometimes I miss the over-airiness of the A-T, but the Denons are flatter. Highest recommendation. Its like getting a $100,000 speaker system!

The best headphones I have ever heard, but…5
I would say the original price of $999 is probably a bit of a stretch on my wallet for these cans, but I would probably say that about ANY headphones. I bought these from a local dealer for right around $700 and I could not be happier with them.

The sound quality is phenomenal and the BASS is the best I have ever heard from a set of headphones. If you like bass, there is no doubt you will absolutely love these cans. All that being said, the bass is not overpowering at all, in fact the entire spectrum of sound is warm and completely audible. If you like hip hop, trance/electronica, rock, or any kind of music with punch, these are the headphones for you. I cannot really speak on jazz and classical, but I have read many reviews suggesting that these cans are a bit to bassy for those particular genres.

Now for the “but”. These are NOT the headphones you would want to plug directly into an Ipod. If that was your plan, don’t waste your money. For that, you can buy a set of Denon AHD1001 for a fifth of the price. Denon D7000s don’t come with a 1/8 inch converter plug, so that should tell you something right off the bat. These are reference headphones with a VERY revealing sound, so anyone planning on listening to only 128kbps music in your Itunes library, and plugging directly into the headphone jack on your dell, probably don’t want to spend the money. So what does all that mean? Basically if you feed these headphones garbage, that is what you will get. These cans should also be driven properly by a decent headphone amp, otherwise you wont even come close to hearing their full potential. So unless you have a nice dedicated headphone amp, sound card, DAC (digital to analog converter), or any combination of the these, you might be happier spending a third of the price on a set of Denon D2000s, which are also a pretty nice set of headphones. That being said, they are worth their weight in gold if you have the right equipment.

P.S. I have a Macbook Pro, and I run an Apogee Duet DAC/headphone amp. Apogee Duet 2-channel FireWire Audio Interface This is a relatively inexpensive DAC/amp combo with a 1/4 inch headphone jack. There is better stuff out there, but for the price, you probably wont find a better sounding DAC/headphone amp solution. I would recommend this to any mac user planning on purchasing these cans.

I just bought this hifonics 2000 watts with two kicker cvx and hits very very hard
this amp dosen’t heat up. I would recomend this amp for a big sound system.

State of the Art5
I’ll start with a short review since I just got the printer and have only run 5 prints through it. I will update in a week or so with more information.

Setup and installation was easy. I have it on my network for my Windows machines and it is connected directly to my Mac Pro. The install documentation said to get the latest driver for Leopard off of their site, which I did and installed with no problem. The latest Windows driver was on the installation CD.

The reason I called this review “State of the Art” is Epson developed Radiance, the new color-matching technology built into the R1900. This is the first printer with it, even the current Epson Pro printers don’t have it. Printerville.net has an article about it.

The few pictures I have printed are beautiful and they printed very fast.

I printed 3 on Epson’s Ultra Premium luster 8.5 x 11 paper using Photoshop CS2. I tried different settings for each print of the same standard color matching target. All three printed very nice and as expected, a little different. Using “Photoshop Determines Colors”, “Printer Determines Colors” and “No Color Management”, with appropriate settings on the printer driver. So it will be up to you to decide which settings you want to use.

Next, as a test I printed a photo, of my daughter, on plain HP Bright White paper. WOW, is all I can say. Plain paper and it looked great.

For my last test I picked a random paper size, 12″ x 12″, that I cut from a 13″ x 19″ sheet of matte paper. I changed the paper size in the driver and printed. No problem, it printed just fine and also was beautiful.

I plan on getting a roll of paper too. I’ve wanted to print some banners, something I couldn’t do with my current Canon I9900.

So far it is everything I expected it to be. However, I do plan on keeping the I9900 because sometimes I know I will want a dye (not pigment) print (and I still have Canon ink and paper left).

Update 3-10-08:

I have been playing with the settings on the driver to see which I like best. It is a good/bad thing that there are so many settings to play with. I figure I will eventually figure out which I like best. There are subtle differences in color, skin tones and gray scales on the gray scales. I will start printing some of my real pictures to compare with the I9900 versions. So I will post another update in a week or two.

I tried a roll in the printer. It was surprising easy to set up and use. You put the holders on the roll, mount it on the back of the printer, then feed the paper into the printer in the slot on the back. The printer recognizes you are doing it, then grabs the paper to feed in to the proper starring point.

If you print multiple images, the printer spaces them 1″ apart. Unfortunately, Epson still has it’s artificial limit length of 44″. There are expensive RIPs (raster image processors) that will allow you to printer longer images, but unless you are going to do this a lot, it can’t be worth it. The cheapest I found is $500.

I’ve decided that I probably will not use the “roll” on the printer. I want to printer banners every so often, but to use the roll for one print wastes about 10″ of paper. That is the initial feed of about 4″ and when you cut it on the back to free it, another 6″. If you are printing many prints on a roll, then it will be worth it and easier. I suggest (and what I did in my second test), was just cut a 44″ of paper (from the roll) and feed it though the (normal) auto paper feeder and that worked fine for the banner without any waste.

As for ink usage, I’ve hardly made a dent with the 10 8×10s, 1 12×12, 3 8.5 x 44 prints I’ve made. The banners were not printed at high resolution to save ink for my testing. I love Amazon, but it’s ink prices for this printer are currently way out of line. Even the Epson store has them for way less. I hope that changes soon.

Update 3-26-08 (my last update).
After printing 25 more 8×10 high resolution (and in slow mode for better quality), I finally ran out of ink in one cartridge (and it was the gloss optimizer). After more reading, I think I used the wrong setting for the gloss and was wasting it on white area outside of the image. I’m still learning.

Some of the other inks are pretty low, so I have stocked up.

I still have not printed on a DVD/CD yet, but I’m sure that will be fine.

There is not much more for me to say except I am very happy with this purchase and expect to use this printer for the next 3-4 years, when I’m sure something else out there will get my attention.

Think twice about buying this printer.1
I’d think seriously before buying this printer. I purchased this printer about 6 weeks ago after NAPP members were offered a discount. I purchased it directly from the Epson Store. I watched the video tutorials on how to get the best results using the R1900 and printing out of Lightroom that were provided on www.photoshopuser.com. I was DELIGHTED at the output and the quality. Never had my printer output so closely matched that of my calibrated monitor, and the 13×19 inch glossies were stunning. I was THRILLED…

UNTIL…about 5 weeks after purchasing the printer I had to replace the Gloss Optimizer cartridge. This runs out fairly quickly as it is applied to the entire photo regardless of colors. Fine, I had extra genuine Epson cartridges I had purchased from a national retailer. Even though it was the correct cartridge the printer would not recognize it, then remembering that Epson had sent an extra Gloss cartridge, I dug it out thinking I had indeed bought the wrong one. I replaced it with the one Epson sent and all was good. I confirmed I had the RIGHT cartridge, and chalked it up to a defective cartridge. No biggy, it happens…THEN the Cyan ran out. I replaced it with a cartridge that I bought directly from the Epson store and had the same issue. The printer says it’s an incompatible cartridge. IT is NOT. I called Epson support on Friday and they said they would send me a new cartridge and that it would be 3-5 days. Fine, but in the meantime I had prints that needed to be printed, so I again went to a retailer and bought a cyan cartridge. Not recognized. I googled the issue and found that other users had had the same issue, and that Epson had replaced their printers with brand new ones. I called Epson again. They said that they would only replace with a refurb since I was past the 30 day mark since I purchased, AND according to the Epson Warranty, I’LL be on the hook for shipping the defective printer to them. Problem is, I’m sure this printer was defective from day one, but since I didn’t print a WHOLE lot right away, the cartridges didn’t need replacing until after the 30 day return was up,and consequently I didn’t find the defect until then. I’m extremely upset. I now have a bunch of defective cartridges and/or printer, no way to print the work I need to get out, and the best I can hope for is to get a REFURBISHED printer to replace the BRAND NEW printer I paid for. Do yourself a favor, look at the Canon and HP equivalent printers. If you search for issues on Epson cartridges, you’ll find TONS. Not necessarily with the R1900, but with almost all Epson printers. This is the first, and LAST Epson I will buy.

Better than I hoped5
I have had this printer for a week now and all I can say is WOW! I was concerned after I read the reviews here but decided to buy anyway because of past experience with Epson, and I am so happy I did.

When the box arrived I picked up the ‘Start Here’ booklet and within an hour and three prints (13″x19″) I was getting better results than the stuff I had paid a professional lab $15.00 each for! No more, I just fired my lab.

I am printing from Photoshop CS3 using Adobe RGB color space and ICC information. The prints are incredibly color saturated with great contrast to really ‘pop’.

I am absolutely in love with this printer!

Another week:

No change in my opinion, other than I like it even more. I printed 20 8×10 and 7 13×19 before having to add ink (Yellow and Cyan). Prints on Epson’s fine art paper are fantastic! This is my last review.

Went from having a Kicker ZX 1000 Watt Mono to Rockford. Was very skeptical at first, but let me tell you…
It blew my expectations out of the water. It’s the best amp i’ve ever owned. Solid, heavy, huge gain, huge sound. I’m slappin 2 12″ Kicker VX with this amp @ 1 ohm. Killer, just killer. I could blow some serious ear drums with a quick bass test from this great amp.
Rockford is the way to go, never knew an amp could be so powerful. Mine BTW was rated at 1242 RMS…tested [per birthsheet]
