    Great Low Priced DLP Projector5
PROS: This projector was purchased to replace my old Proxima Projector with a burnt out bulb.
(Same cost for new projector vs. replacement bulb)
I have it ceiling mounted at 14′ from screen with a 96″ diagonal screen. The picture is large and bright.
The setup was very quick once you realize to use the arrow keys in the middle and not the ones on top. Use the “Auto” Setting for picture size and you’ll always have the largest picture when switching from TV to DVD.
The projector has a 3k lamp life in Bright mode and 4k in Normal. Bright is great for daytime viewing, but Normal is more than enough for Night time viewing. The projector will also give you a warning when your within 30 hours of the end of the buld life. Overall Great Picture Quality and Size especially for the price.

CONS: I didn’t know that you need a special adaptor when doing a Ceiling Mount. My old projector was mounted with 1 screw and the Optima projector requires a 3 Screw mounting plate adaptor. (Needs to be purchased seperately)

    Optoma EX532 2800 Lumens 1024 x 768 Projector5
I purchased this unit to be used in a classroom setting with my 10″ Netbook.
The 2800 lumens works very well in a daylight environment with brilliant color images. The sound output is a little weak and needs external speakers when presenting with sound.

    Impressed so far!5
Just received the Optoma EX532 today. Impressive image quality and the 2800 lumens is plenty bright enough to work in my living room with the lights on – pretty cool. Also, the projector is extremely quiet. Smaller and lighter than I expected too – pretty awesome for $550. Have no idea how it will withstand the test of time but very impressed with the projector for the 2 hrs I’ve played with it.

Great AMP. Blows Kicker outta the water.5
Went from having a Kicker ZX 1000 Watt Mono to Rockford. Was very skeptical at first, but let me tell you…
It blew my expectations out of the water. It’s the best amp i’ve ever owned. Solid, heavy, huge gain, huge sound. I’m slappin 2 12″ Kicker VX with this amp @ 1 ohm. Killer, just killer. I could blow some serious ear drums with a quick bass test from this great amp.
Rockford is the way to go, never knew an amp could be so powerful. Mine BTW was rated at 1242 RMS…tested [per birthsheet]

    The best in its class!!5
It is the best brand, i’m a prosfessional audio car installer. You won’t be disapointed with this AMP.

I got this tripod for use when I really need stability on night shots. It will be a few weeks before I will have a chance to fully test it, but based on the construction and weight I expect it to perform quite well. The tripod is solid and constructed well. Adjustments are easy to make with a simple turn of the cuffs on the legs, collar on the central column. There is a spring loaded hook at the bottom of the column for hanging a weight to increase stability. The tripod comes with a nice carrying case with adjustable/removable strap, inner pocket for accessories and with a cap for the mounting screw. The mounting screw is 1/4″ and will not directly fit in a camera so you either need an adapter or head. I have a simple tilt/swivel Manfroto head that I will be using to stabilize my Canon 5d II. The feet are interchangeable so you can add spikes if you want to shoot in dirt vs. the smooth studio feet that the unit comes with. The unit weighs in at around 6 pounds, but that’s quite light for a tripod this sturdy that can support 26+ lbs. I’m pretty sure that 26 is a fairly conservative estimate and this would undoubtedly hold a decent size telescope too. Overall, I think this is a very sturdy tripod that is well worth the street price though I consider the list price too high.

    induro c413 tripod2
I ordered this tripod because i wanted a carbon fiber light weight field tripod. As soon as I opened the box I knew it as going back. The bloody thing weights a ton. It would be fine for a studio set up but never for the field.

I got this amp to replace another brand of similar specs and Wow! Huge upgrade. The first time i turned it up it knocked my rearview mirror right off, cd visor and anything that wasn’t bolted down did not stay where it started. The remote bass knob is a great touch. I definitely recommend this amp you will not be dissapointed.

    Customer Reviews:

Nice, but can’t change the laws of physics. Also one big design issue.4
I purchased the DHT-FS3 hoping not so much for a 5.1 sound-alike experience but simply hoping for a good “TV speaker replacement” system. Unfortunately, while the Denon is the best sounding system of its type, it simply wasn’t to be for my application.

First, the size of the unit is a bit larger in some ways that one would expect and smaller than others. Denon obviously designed the unit to fit in front of a flat screen TV, as they thoughtfully provided feet that are widely spaced (about 20″) so that the unit can straddle the front of most TV manufacturer’s flat screen pedestals. But it’s also wider than one might expect – it’s wider than a 16:9 32″ TV, but a bit narrower than a 37″.

The sound is GOOD, but not great. At no time will you think you’re in front of not only a 5.1 surround system but even a decent stereo system using bookshelf loudspeakers; however it does sound better than any built-in TV speakers could, and it outdoes most “mini” systems as well, likely including offerings such as Denon’s own S-101 HTIB system. Like most such systems, the bass is a bit “thumpy” – the sub just doesn’t integrate well with the satellites and crosses over fairly high – around 125-150 Hz – so you never lose sight of the fact that most of your sound is coming from “up there” but the bass notes are coming from “down there.”

The unit has multiple inputs – two sets of RCAs for analog, including one set that can be used with one of Denon’s iPod docks, two optical digital and one coaxial digital. The setup has many nice features, including distance to the listener, bass/treble (unlike Bose systems, but here the adjustments are in fairly large 2dB increments) and a nice universal remote to control your TV, DVD player and the speaker unit. It can play in straight stereo, “wide” surround, Dolby Digital or even DTS, and all sound reasonably good for this application.

The design flaw? While not Denon’s fault, most every flat panel TV manufacturer puts the sensor for their remote control along the bottom of the TV, meaning if the Denon’s sitting in front of the TV, I can just about guarantee it will be blocking the TV’s remote sensor unless you’re using it with a larger set (40″ or more) and the sensor’s in the corner, or your TV somewhat more intelligently placed the sensor along the TV’s sides or top frame.

I don’t mean to come across as overly harsh, but I really had high hopes for a product like this from Denon, and sound-wise it really didn’t sound as good as I thought it would. That’s not really their fault; you can only do so much with smaller drivers in a rather small enclosure. But on the other hand, it does do a better job of producing a virtual surround effect than any TV’s built-in surround effect (e.g. “SRS”) or the similar Yamaha Sound Projectors.

So in short, it’s worth a try if you’re looking for a product like this, but the fact that it would block my TV’s IR sensor immediately made it a non-starter for me as soon as I removed it from its box. Perhaps in a future model Denon can thoughtfully provide an “IR blaster” on the back of the unit to automatically repeat IR signals it sees to any TV sensors that may be located behind it.

It’s truly a beautiful LOOKING unit, the piano black finish blending nicely with the similar finish used on most flat panels that don’t use a silvery frame. It’s certainly a reasonable value for the price, given what it would cost to build a similar quality system for components or find as high quality a HTIB (“Home Theatre in a Box”) system.

However, for the sole reason that it blocks my TV’s remote sensor, I’ve no alternate place to place it, and it neither has an IR blaster nor provision to drive one, it’s back in its shipping box just about three hours after first opening it.

    Great product, poor customer service.3
The Denon DHT-FS3 is a great surround sound compliment to a small room that doesn’t allow many speakers and wires. In addition, it’s the perfect solution for a large plasma television. The sound enhancement is fantastic and the sleak design is impressive. The downside is it’s a littly pricey.

I must mention, however, that the customer service is absolutely terrible. I’m not sure if it was the holiday rush or the fact that they want to sell only to dealers, but my experience was less than impressive. I tried at least 10 times to speak live with a customer service support without success. I went so far as to leave two messages at the Denon corporate office for the customer service manager and other executives, but never received a return call.

Bottom line, the product is good but don’t plan for any support. I was a first time and last time Denon customer with my purchase of the DHT-FS3.

    good simple htib system4
The Good: looks great with black piano finish
    easy setup with few wires
    simple operation
    excellent sound
can be mounted or just place on enclosed cradle in front of tv

The Bad: not much surround sound, you will hear some sounds coming at you
from the sides, but no rear sound detection.
on some tvs the remote sensor could be covered by the bar, be
sure and measure the height of your sensor.
    expensive

Overall: very good sound, easy setup and operation, would be hard to
beat the quality of this if you want to avoid wires and other
complications of a true 5.1 system.

    From the Manufacturer
The Denon DHT-FS3 Home Theater in a Box is a two-piece, compact and simple solution for home theater surround sound designed to mount below or on top the television for proper sound distribution. Zumo 550 – A Few Thoughts4

People complain about the Zumo not having a built in speaker. Well, you wouldn’t be able to hear it while riding your bike it if it had one, so it’s a bit of a moot point.

On a side note, I think there are some features the unit lacks that can be somewhat annoying. First, and definitely the most annoying for me, the elevation by which you view your position on a GPS determines the amount of detail you see, i.e. POI’s, street names, distance of road to travel, etc. The units I have used previously (factory nav in a Honda, other Garmins and the Mio 310 to name a few) had the ability to select zoom/elevation from the main nav screen allowing you to choose your “view” of the road so to speak, at anytime. With the Zumo, you cannot change elevation/zoom from the main nav screen, you can only adjust it while in map mode searching for a destination. The second you go back to the main navigation screen you loose the elevation you chose and go back to a default level of zoom, which for me is real irritating.

Another annoying feature is the keyboard for text input does not offer a QWERTY layout. I have not had to type on an ABCDEF style keyboard since the invention on the PC. In fact, I have a Garmin IQue 3600 that’s 4 years old and it has a QWERTY keyboard?

Also, the search function on the Zumo is relatively slow at times. I once waited 4+ minutes while searching for a popular restaurant. It found it eventually, but for a while I thought the unit just froze up. I happen to be sitting in my driveway so it was only a minor annoyance, but if you were parked on the roadside with cars buzzing by it would seem more like an eternity.

One other issue, the built in hard drive is pretty much full with maps right out of the box, which isn’t that big of a deal with the open SD slot. The SD slot lets you slip in a SD card for expanded memory capability (MP3 storage etc.), but when loading routes from your PC (which is a great feature I’ll touch on below) you must save the data directly to the units hard drive in order for the Zumo to be able to read it. Well, that’s going to be an issue when the hard drive fills up from firmware updates, etc.

While I’m at it, I think the icon that marks your position on the map is annoyingly large. It makes your car or bike look the size of a lake, or some other large map detail.

On the plus side, I believe that all of the issues I mentioned are correctable via a firmware update and a few bugs are to be expected to some extent given this is the 1st generation of a new model. Although, you can also argue that with the price this thing sells for combined with the experience Garmin has building GPS devices there is really no excuse for the Zumo lacking anything.

A nice feature, which is common on Garmins top units, is that you can map out routes on your PC, load it to the Zumo (again, on the built in hard drive though not the SD card) and away you go. This comes in handy if you’re in sales for example and need to hit a few clients on a particular day or if you’re going to be cruising on your bike and have a bunch of places you want to stop at during the trip. Rather than having to wait and program destinations one at a time as you make your stops, you can knock them all out the night before on your PC so you’re entire trip is planned before it’s even begun.

Also, the Bluetooth feature is sweet and works flawlessly. Pairing the Zumo with my Blackberry was a breeze. The Zumo was able to read my address book and displayed the contacts on the phone screen so there was never a need to touch the Blackberry once paired. When in the car, the speaker worked well and people on the other end seemed to have no trouble hearing me. I disagree with the one reviewer that said the mount looked weak. I think the mount would successfully support a cinderblock on rough road.

Installing the Zumo on my ZZR1200 took me about 30 min. It takes some time to run the wires and connect to the battery. You will need to crimp connectors (that are not supplied) on the end of the wires that go to the battery. The Ram mount is real solid. The Zumo does not move once you’re locked in and on the road.

Now for the justification of the 4 star rating given I beat the Zumo up quite a bit. The build quality of this thing it second to none. It is literally built like a tank. I’d bet it would outlast anyone who buys it. Again, firmware updates will likely take care of all its shortcomings over time. And last but not least, Garmin tech support is second to none. No matter who you speak to they are knowledgeable, professional and will provide answers to anything you can throw at them (and I come up with some good ones) all without making you feel like you’re annoying or a technological moron.

Therefore, I don’t think you can go wrong with any Garmin, if you can swallow the price of the unit.

Zumo 550 with updated software (04/2007)5
I just wanted to comment on the Zumo 550 with current software. I purchased this unit about 3 weeks ago and before I got it I was a little disheartened by some people’s reviews on some lacking features. However when i got the unit and upgraded to the latest software (that was available as of 4/15/2007) many negative comments seem to have been addressed (if I’m understanding the commented issues correctly). First the views of the unit seem very flexable and I don’t see the limitations. You can select between 2-D top down views for the people who are used to that view or 3-D. The unit has multiple levels of zoom/un-zoom from the big buttons on the outside as well as on the touch screen… I’m just not seeing any limitations. You can also taylor how much detail you want to see on the screen ( more or less). The only thing I do agree with is the Icon’s used to show your position (you can choose between about 6 or so) are kind of large. Would have been nice to have the choice to alter that but I chose the ‘wedge’ and it works nicely with the screen size. Second, definitely a software upgrade was the addition of two different compus views.. .one small indication on the main map screen and a full 360 degree compus graphic with ELEVATION on a separate screen (selectable from the big rubber buttons or through the menu). The unit is unbelievable compared to earlier units I’ve had .. I can litterally stand in my family room under cover and turnaround and move 1 step (sometimes 2 is needed) and the unit will reflect the change in direction! I use this with a common motorola razr phone and a Scala Rider helmet bluetooth unit (on a shoei rf-1000 helmet) and everything works perfectly. Also, as far as weatherproofing the manual indicates it can be kept under 1 meter of water for 30 minutes! Great mounting hardware and super easy to use.. definitely a fantastic unit with the latest software upgrades. Thanks.

    Zumo 550 on a Harley FLSTSC5
The 550 works very well. Specs say it works between 32 & 140 degrees. I ride all winter – so far it works at 15 degrees F. Surprisingly easy to use with heavy winter riding gloves. The motorcycle mount is much cleaner than I expected. Very flexible, allowing the unit to tuck in close and not look dorky. The car mount is clean with an acceptable albeit not great speaker. It’s VERY easy to move between vehicles. I was somewhat disappointed at first about the lack of a built in speaker, but if I need to walk around with it, it’s no big deal to use your cell phone Bluetooth with it. Maybe that’s the price you pay for a truely waterproof unit. While riding, you can hear the alert tone using a cell phone Bluetooth, but cannot understand the audio. I plugged in iPod ear buds into the bike mount and it sounds great without being obvious about being “plugged in” (I ride a half helmet). If you use a full face with built in speakers you will be very happy with the audio.
Others complained about the lack of things like a real compass and satellite acquisition display and built in speaker. I have addressed the speaker issue. The compass displays eight points (like the one in the rear view mirror of your GM car). That’s all I really need. Showing the satellites it has acquired is neat – but what do I really care – the thing is very sensitive. I get 5 of 5 bars IN my house. The MP3 player does work well although it does not have play lists. You can at least sort by album, artist and genre. To listen to decent quality audio, you will need ear buds. Displaying pictures looks good but the response is a little sluggish.
Storing up to 50 routes is great – and being able to download them to Google Earth and visualize them is very slick (it does take Google Earth Plus – a $20 annual fee to support this feature).
Overall I am VERY pleased with this unit – it does exactly what I need (and then some) – looks great – very sturdy.

    Customer Reviews:

Shines in video, tad weak in audio5
    PROS

    Video:

Consistent high picture quality across all resolutions, but at times consistently over saturated at 480i analog. With available custom user settings, the SE94 allows one to set a custom preset 480i color compensation. All the following were reviewed via Cable TV setting, DVD player or using the [...] test DVD.

    color balance
    image movement
    still
    sharpness
free of artifacts: jaggies, ghosting, image runs, especially in fast motion video

These are the settings I’ve tested:
480i via analog TV signal or digital
480p standard DVD output and digital TV
    720p Broadcast HD digital
    1080i Broadcast HD digital
    1080p DVD output upconverting

Sharp’s advanced video features are set at default, most are OFF. The test DVD showed a small amount of red color bleed and slight staggering in anti-aliasing tests, but no moire patterns.

I compared the video with input provided by a Sony NS700H/B DVD Player. The video is inferior via composite but there is little difference in images between component and HDMI inputs. I compared audio RCA cables instead of component cables on the component jack and was surprised by a slightly degraded picture, so slight it would not be noticed unless it was compared against HDMI.

HDMI offers some convenience features: it auto selects the HDMI input once signal is detected, and turns off the device automatically once the TV is turned off.

    Tuner:

Includes NTSC, ATSC and QAM tuner. The QAM tuner allows access to ‘open’ digital channels, not advertised by the cable company.

    Shipment:

Via Amazon ordering, deliverer carefully followed sign off instructions to the letter: allowed me to examine the condition of the box at delivery, open box, and examine contents before I signed off on the delivery.

    Setup:

Quick and easy. Attach speakers then mount stand, all screws or bolts supplied with tools. Plug into AC and cable coax, and the SE94 automatically detects signal and begins EZSETUP process. Follow onscreen instructions and when done, the TV is ready to watch cable or air broadcasts.

For Input jacks, equally easy. Just snap on the cables as color coded or the HDMI, then select INPUT from the remote until you receive signal from the device. On HMDI devices, it auto detects signal and auto selects that input first.

Setup is unique per input. The SE94 remembers the volume and video setting of each input.

    Packing:

Very durable and sturdy. The lower half of the box serves as a stand until you can assemble the enclosed stand. Importantly, the styrofoam pads never go farther than the metal frame of the LCD panel, and thus do not touch the glass panel anyway. It would be wise to save the box in case this TV needs to be returned, its very customized to the TV and difficult to provide the same protection for shipping as this box.

    Instructions:

The Sharp manual is not as well written as a Sony manual. It seems to require more careful reading, whereas Sony’s has always been user friendly.

    Cables:

None supplied. I used or bought cables elsewhere.

    Faux leather trim:

Is almost invisible, other TVs with shiny metallic borders often get dulled by fingerprints, the faux leather appears cleaner longer because it hides dirt better.

    CONS

Remote layout poor but provides access to all the TV’s functions: related or frequently used buttons are not grouped logically together and often small; it can’t be operated without looking at the keys, e.g. the universal controller has a toggle that lights up LEDs when its set for DVD, VCR, TV etc., whereas on a Sony, these are all unique buttons, and easier to find and press.

Bands: Using the detailed [...] TV tests, slight bands were detected on my SE94 using ‘grey scale’ test, its otherwise most invisible. On some LCD TV forums, there are reports of sizable bands in the SE94 series that are annoying and can be seen in regular video. Just how common these are is unknown.

Volume is a tad weak: at 15Wx2 its rated stronger than many competitor LCD TVs yet it output is weaker compared to my old analog TV. The emulating ‘Surround’ algorithm of Sharp is not as ’surround’ as the SRS algorithm.

    CONCLUSION:

Given the audio issue, I’d rate it 4.5 Stars versus 5. The video is so stellar, it more than outweighs the audio drawbacks. Buyers should be cautious that reports of banding has been reported in the SE94 series, and it can be very troublesome.

    Excellent TV4
Very good picture. The high-def image looks amazing. I’ve only had two small problems with it. First, I’ll sometimes hear a high-pitched noise when changed from a digital channel to an analog channel. This goes away if I switch back to digital, then to analog again. Second, I’ve had the picture not display when turning the TV on. To fix this, I turn the TV off, wait for a few minutes, then turn it back on.

    Top-tier image quality5
This is among the best quality TVs made in 2008.
There are now sets with better picture quality, such as the Limited Edition series (also from Sharp) which use LED backlighting, but they are quite expensive.
There are many brands of television, but Samsung and Sharp manufacture the vast majority of LCD panels.
Other brands, even big names like Sony, Toshiba, and Pioneer, only buy panels from manufacturers and build electronics around them. Sony, in particular, charges quite a lot for their brand name even though they didn’t even make the panel!

Some Sharp panels from past models were known for having a color banding problem. This was endemic in Sharp televisions for a long time, though most peopled did not notice. I am happy to report that this set does not suffer the same problem.

Absolute contrast is 3000:1, 3 times that of most other sets. Dynamic contrast (contrast achieved by adjusting the intensity of the backlight) is 27,000:1, and in practice, the brightness this set can produce is almost over the top. It literally hurts my eyes and lights up the entire living room, though I usually keep it at low settings because I am not into intensely bright screens.

My 46″ set uses about 150W of power at 20% backlight — not bad. It can use just over 300W at full brightness (actual measurement).

The internet service, “Aquos Connect”, is fairly worthless. It is slow, takes up screen space (or the whole screen), and has terribly response latency — if you switch views or turn it on/off, it takes a while to comply. It may be handy for showing weather or stock information occasionally, but you will probably be more likely to walk to a nearby computer or change to an appropriate TV station rather than work with the clunky TV internet interface. The possibility of remote servicing and diagnosis sounds promising, however.

I can’t comment on the speakers as I use an external stereo.

The connections are well placed and, in particular, the HDMI and RCA ports on the right side of the TV are very useful for connecting temporary hardware, such as a friend’s game console.

This TV handles many more resolutions with the VGA connector than any previous HDTV I’ve had. I tested it at 1600×1200, but no higher. Works well.
I use this screen mainly as a computer monitor, connecting my computers DVI-out to one of the TV’s HDMI connectors using an HDMI cable and adapter. It looks beautiful and works very well for both business applications (even Photoshop, which has long been a poor program to run on other LCD screens due to color accuracy problems) and gaming. The response time is so fast as to not notice any blur or shearing, and the TV works perfectly at a full 1080P, 60 Hz.

This screen may be able to display at 120Hz, but it cannot accept input at 120Hz. 60Hz is the maximum, at least at 1080P. This leads one to wonder how it can play a Blu-Ray movie without shearing at 24P if it cannot accept input at an even multiple of 24.

One final noteworthy comment is that this screen does NOT have a glare problem at all. Many glossy screens, especially those on notebooks, reflect the surrounding light so well that you can shave in your reflection. Very distracting. This television has absolutely no glare problem whatsoever. Its glare is even lower than the previously popular matte (non-shiny) LCD panels.
I can only see noticeable light reflection at about a 60-90 degree viewing angle (though even at extreme angles, the picture still looks fine).

Overall I am very happy with this TV and find its faults to be incredibly minor. I’d recommend it over any other 2008 television set (though Samsung has very nice panels as well). However, if you want the highest-end and are willing to pay for it, look for something with LED backlighting.
