Mixed experience so far, from awesome to awful4
6/3/2009 Update
I’ve been using the device for a few weeks now. It has a lot of potential and things can be done, but many applications/features lack the quality of a mature product: inconsistent and unfriendly interface, missing features etc.

Major issues:
1. Small POI database. Only 2 mln POIs, and so far, no way to buy or import additional POIs. Big problem for me, and no easy way around. Finding missing POIs using Google at home takes longer than on a regular GPS unit with built-in POIs. You cannot use Google on the road (or it is much more difficult). Some GPS devices have 6 or more millions of POIs; you can really appreciate it after using the limited 2mln Clarion’s database.

2. POI search speed can be from 10 seconds to 3 minutes!!! depending on user’s entry. 3 minutes – it is just an absurd number. It must be fixed.

3. No Bluetooth hands-free calling. (The GPS is supposed to work with a phone. Why not hands-free calling? I need a BT headset? How many more electronics should I carry?)

4. Bluetooth dial-up network (DUN) doesn’t work with my phone. I was surprised because it was one of the major selling points. Clarion provides only a list of compatible networks and my network is on that list. No list of compatible/supported phones.(My phone’s DUN works with my other devices)

My hope is that Clarion will keep releasing updates and improving its functionality.

Written before 6/3/2009
The great:
1. Integration with the Internet:
a) You can send POIs from the Internet to ClarionMiND. Even with good GPS units finding POIs may be difficult: you either don’t find it or you find too many. ClarionMiND lets you plan your trip on your computer at home using Google Maps, and send POIs to the device. Great feature!!!
b) Great desktop-class Internet browser. You will be able to do everything you can do on your desktop at home, including Flash videos.
c) Google search, and it is integrated with navigation.
2. Navigation (I will update this review on route quality after I use the unit more):
a) So far routes look good.
b) Lane assist. It shows which lane on a multi-lane road you should take.
c) Nice job with voice directions. For example, it tells you something like, “go to the right side of the road” in order to prepare you for right turn.
d) All info needed for navigation is on the screen: compass heading (N, NE, E…), arrival time, distance, next and current street.
e) auto-zoom.
3. POI
a) Very fast search
b) You can preview POIs on the map. This is something nice and unique. You can select a single or a group of POIs and see them on a temporary map.
4. Address entry
a) Very fast.
b) QWERTY keyboard
c) Predictable entry. Only valid keys are active. As you keep entering data, it shows what was found at the top of the screen.
d) It remembers previous entry, and lets you re-start search from any level: state, city, street.
5. Hardware:
a) Gorgeous, high-resolution, large screen
b) Touchscreen works well. It is responsive.
c) Dedicated hardware buttons for Home, Top Menu, Music/Sound.
d) Great to hold in hands
6. Free Internet traffic. So far, I didn’t find if it is integrated with navigation. There will be an option for radio traffic which, most likely, will be integrated.
7. Internet weather, news, email etc
8. Fast GPS lock. Less than 30 seconds.

The bad:
1.POI database is small. I couldn’t find retail stores like, Walmart, Target, Costco etc
2.The car mount is awful. It is a few 100s dollars device with a “$1″ mount. Very difficult to mount/dismount.
3.After you mount the device, it automatically limits its Internet functionality. Result: you cannot use the Internet in your garage when the device is mounted. You have to dismount it 1st, check the Internet, mount it again. AWFUL!!! If they wanted to make it safe, they should detect vehicle speed from the GPS.
4.Addresses are not displayed in the American format (number street, city zip), but as zip city street number.
5.Keyboard
a) Inconsistent keys. Sometimes, it is character-only; sometimes, characters and digits.
b) Inconsistent behavior: to accept, sometimes you have to click “Back”, sometimes “Enter”; sometimes something else.
6.Too many keystrokes needed to see the route overview.
7.Current time is not displayed during navigation.
8.The device gets very hot.
9. Video player doesn’t accept many video formats.

The bottom line:
It is a great navigation device: very fast, detailed spoken commands, plenty of details on the screen, great map, good routes. The device could be a perfect GPS but they have to add more POIs, BT hands-free calling, and polish the interface. ClarionMiND works very well with the Internet: it will have more or less of a practical meaning for different people.

Traffic integration is not a strong point.3
I have used this unit for a few weeks. The navigation part is excellent. Google search is useless without Wifi. POI is a joke…it cannot even find Walmart down the street. In order to get any usefulness in searches, I had to setup Wifi in my car. Traffic integration is awful. The traffic applet cannot zoom. You have to switch screens to see traffic. This cannot be done if you mount the unit. Mounting the unit switches it to car mode. The traffic receiver NK1U works okay if you get a signal. See my review. Overall, the unit is still very rough. I am hopeful that with software updates, traffic can be updated via Wifi instead of the Docking station. I had a Dash Express prior to this unit, but it got stolen. The Dash Express had better traffic information…I miss my now stolen and dead (company is on skeleton crew) Dash Express.

A Linux Geeks Dream4
Overall as a GPS I pretty much agree with “Stan Matofu’s” review of the device above. However, I purchased this device in December primarily as a portable media player for my car. Everything else that this device offers was extra, especially considering that I purchased this device for a shade over $100. After having it for a couple of weeks and hacking on it for a while, I would say that I am pretty pleased with the device. Firstly, the device has an Intel Atom Z530, Intel GMA500 (Poulsbo) integrated graphics and 4GB SSD, which is pretty “standard” netbook/UMPC class hardware. With the standard USB port that is built in, one can attach a thumbdrive of practically any size for an infinite amount of music on the go. Additionally, by plugging in a USB keyboard, and switching to virtual console 3 (Ctrl-Alt-F3), you can login as the root user and hack the device to your pleasure (default password is ‘1234′). Wifi support is pretty rock-solid. DUN support over Bluetooth works well with my Blackberry Storm, which is great because I can use this device as a quasi-internet tablet while in the car(parked of course :) ) The device itself is based on Asianux Midinux Linux which is a offshoot of Fedora. Ubuntu’s netbook remix also runs on the device. Installing whichever OS you want on the device is pretty simple, as the USB ports are 1st in the boot order of the device. Heck, even Windows XP runs like a champ on this device. The hardware, according to its specifications, supports up to a 4GB microSD card. I’ve happily been using a Transcend 8GB microSDHC card with this device to store my music. At its original price of ~$600, there would be no way that I would have bought it. As a ~$100 GPS unit, it is quite serviceable. It has its quirks as all devices do, yet it has some pretty nice features, especially if you can connect it via PPP over Bluetooth so that it gets Internet in-vehicle. Finally, as a portable Linux based computer, it is very much worth the cost alone. I am purchasing a second one, just because it is so hackable.

Customer Reviews:

Fine but expected a bit better3
I’ve had this for about a month. It works ok but since I have two other HDTVs at home so I got a good chance to compare (instead of just the giddiness of owning the first HDTV). The 6ms response time doesn’t bother me as I don’t think I can tell the difference between 6 ms and 4ms 9as.

The good:

Lower power consumption comparing to some other brands. Channel change is quick. You wouldn’t know the importance of this unless you have one that’s slow. Great menu selections. You can customize about anything. No banding.

Now the not so good:

I don’t know how many dead pixels for such a screen size is considered acceptable. Mine came with at least two dozen. They are so small and I can’t tell from beyond two feet away, so ok.

The speakers are really bad. Yeah maybe it’s as bad as it can be. Even my wife can easily tell the difference between the build-in speakers and my $20 computer speakers that I plugged in.

One of the holes in the back that bolt the TV to the stand is slightly off position, as a result, the screw can’t go in. The delivery guy tried 10 min, and I tried 20 min myself. It’s not a deal breaker as the other 3 were screwed on fine, but just makes you wonder the cost-cutting has gotten to a dangerous point.

In the end I didn’t return it because of the hassle of returning and the hassle of having to find another one. I expected a bit more from a supposedly higher end model, however.

2008 version of 64U5
Check the reviews for the lc42d64u model. The “65u” is the fall 2008 version of it. I had to do a lot of research (hours) to figure this out. Even Sharp’s website is still listing the 64u’s at this time. Found this at productwiki.com

http://www.productwiki.com/sharp-aquos-d65u-series/

There have been over 60 5 start ratings on the 64u at amazon.com so I thought you might be interested in a little more feedback before making your purchase. Given the vast price difference, I figure it’s just new and no one knows about it so this may be a get it while you can opportunity…

According to the site mentioned, the only difference is the energy star functionality, which can be turned off, according to the previous rater.

Great product, crystal clear picture quality5
I bought that tv 3 weeks ago.Since that time, we are enjoying watching tv and dvd movies as whole family. Black is real black and the colors are vivid. I also connect my tv to my laptop and use as a monitor. Superb result.Great product, great buy.
20% energy saving option is an additional feature which is great.

Leaps ahead of other AIO laser printer-copiers5
After my HP laser printer died, our small office needed a laser combination printer-copier that was inexpensive to maintain and highly reliable. Totally unknown to me prior to study: AIO or MFC searches will frequently bring up only printer combos that include all 4 functions: print, copy, scan, and fax.

After an extended search produced poor options, I discovered the DCP line which includes 3 of the 4 functions, dropping only the fax. This one difference from the MFC line meant far faster copy speeds, better quality printing and copying, and generally better quality all around on the 3 functions it performs.

The DCP-8080DN can be connected to a computer by USB and other means; can be networked in a LAN; will copy as a stand-alone (using ADF or manual feed); comes with a full-sized toner cartridge (for est. 15,000 pages) rather than the skimpy initial toner with others. Toner is available in high-yield size that makes cost between 1-2 cents per page, so reasonable consumables. When added to initial purchase price of $330, the initial and long term costs are manageable.

Yes, it is somewhat large but it’s proving its value already. No more need for separate copier. It’s completely silent when not in use and starts up pretty quickly. When printing, after warm up of maybe 12 seconds, pages pump out at the fastest rate I have ever seen for a small office laser printer. Seems the specs say 30 ppm, and it seems to be printing @ this rate. Copy speed is only slightly less fast. It will copy and print in duplex (2 sided) but speeds are considerably slower than printing/copying 2 separate pages.

Scanning is excellent, with capacity to scan to email, and also includes an OCR software Presto Page Manager 7.18, which works well. We already have a Scansnap for scanning, so we won’t use scanning often.

Faxing is on the way out, with sheet feed scanning to pdf and emailing sufficing quite nicely.

We paid $330 on Amazon, used Prime for free, fast shipping, and it was here in 2 days. Set-up was fast and easy. Its Quick Set-Up documentation could serve as a model for other companies. (What a relief, too!) Works great with both Apple-Mac and PCs.

Brother should do a better job in distinguishing and marketing this DCP line. I only accidentally bumped into it, yet it offers several models for a range of prices. Finally, a multi-function printer that does not degrade printing because the unit adds copying and scanning.

Excellent replacement for an old workhorse5
We just (yesterday) received this printer from Amazon. It replaces a printer/copier/scanner that we loved but which finally gave up the ghost, a DCP-1200, an earlier generation of this new machine. The 1200 cost us $650 in 2000, and we used and abused it for nine years — an astonishing life-span in this era of 2-3 year replacement cycles. Between my wife and me we wrote three full-length books in that time period, printing out countless new drafts of each — not to mention literally thousands and thousands of pages of research materials, plus many documents, support forms, and academic papers as we continued both our part-time business and my academic program. Our new 8080dn has that and more in store for it over the coming years. Surprisingly, the 8080 cost us half what our old 1200 did, yet has many improvements and new features. It does everything the 1200 did, yet copies and prints much faster, offers double the print resolution (if we ever need it!), and has the duplex feature which I absolutely love – I’ve already cut in half much of our paper consumption. Installation was simple and straightforward(I had my 16-year-old and his friends do it — under my supervision! — as a learning experience), and it functions very smoothly and simply. The user interface is even simpler and more intuitive than that of the old 1200. I can’t testify to its longevity, but it seems equally well built — so who knows, maybe we’ll still be using it in 2018.

Industrial strength, extremely low cost…5
Brother is just dominant in this segment of the market. For the price of a personal laser, this printer can handle all the printing/scanning needs for a small business of up to 20 people. We have it in our home office (just two of us, but one does a lot of printing) and I LOVE not having to buy toner every few weeks. We bought from someone other than Amazon, but now Amazon’s price is very good.

Pros:

– Most economical work group/small business printer in the universe — toner cartridge that handles 8000 copies is about $80 — that’s one cent per page!
– Very good build quality, feels and sounds like industrial strength materials.
– Great performance — 30 ppm. Relatively fast first page time. Good solid (though not fast) duplexing. Reliable paper handling.
– Network drivers are very good, very stable. We have installed on XP, Vista and Win 7 and everything — printing and scanning — just works.
– Sheet fed scanner works well — you can feed it 50 page stacks of paper and it will scan or copy very rapidly. Software supports scanning direct to multipage PDF. (After 3 months — printer and drivers have continued to perform extremely well — no hassles at all)
– Energy features are great. Printer goes to sleep and consumes just a few watts, but it also wakes up fast. So you don’t have to switch it on and off.

Cons:

– (Not really a problem, but just a limitation) — the 8080 does NOT scan double sided documents (full duplex). You need to spend an extra $75 for the model 8085 for duplex scanning. However you can scan single sided documents and print them double sided (i.e. duplex printing).
– Rather bulky for a desktop. Much bigger than consumer lasers.
– This duplexer is not fast enough for really high volumes — you need to spend some real money to get that. But the machine is sure-handed so you can hand it a big duplexing/collating job and let it chunk away at it for a few minutes and come back without worrying about misfeeds. We’ve have one misfeed in three months.

Don’t waste your time1
This is my first Trendnet purchase and it will be my last. I am not sure why they thought it was a good idea to include a camera that doesn’t support sound in a package marketed for baby monitoring and security. Actually the camera was the best part of the package. The monitor was useless. Even after a firmware upgrade it was so slow and sluggish that is was unusable. The software setup was not intuitive at all. I finally got it on the wifi network but it would only take a snapshot of the camera and then lockup. I also found it odd that it was able to take a snapshot of the camera without ever entering the camera password which makes me think the camera wasn’t very secure. I found another review online that noted the same problems with the M7 being unresponsive. I am not sure how a company can release such garbage on consumers.

Baby Monitor?1
For some reason this is marked as a baby monitor. Well it doesn’t have sound on the monitor, and the camera isn’t night vision capable. So how do i use this to watch my child at night? TrendNet even got me to buy the other camera that has night vision. I have a very nice router in the house that keeps my computers going 24/7 yet these camera’s always drop off the net. I just quit using it. I will never buy Trendnet again, unless they refund my purchases. Worst purchase here at amazon i have made yet. Ended up buying a $99 system at another store and it does much much better, and more portable.
